Stay Off the Ice: DLRG Warns of Unstable Ice Conditions in Brandenburg

DLRG Warns Against Entering Ice Surfaces on Brandenburg Waters Due to Insufficient Ice Thickness

Cottbus, Germany – Despite freezing temperatures, the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) strongly advises against entering ice surfaces on Brandenburg’s bodies of water, emphasizing the lack of a safe, load-bearing ice cover.

"There may be one or two bodies of water that already have an ice cover capable of bearing weight," stated a DLRG spokesperson. "However, in most cases, this is not so."

Rescue Operation in Cottbus

Over the weekend, a rescue operation took place in Cottbus. Two girls ventured onto a frozen pond but found themselves stranded and unable to return to safety. Fortunately, they were rescued from the pond by emergency responders.

Recommended Minimum Ice Thickness

The DLRG strongly advises against entering ice surfaces with a thickness of less than 15 centimeters. Despite forecasted freezing temperatures overnight, it is unlikely that such an ice thickness will be achieved.

"We need several days of temperatures below zero degrees," explained the spokesperson. "During the day, temperatures in Brandenburg frequently rise above freezing. In most places, the ice will not be thick enough."

Spreewald-Info Warns of Misjudgments

A spokesperson for Spreewald-Info also discourages ice skating at this time. While some partial areas of frozen ice may exist on tributaries with low water flow, many people are unfamiliar with these locations. The spokesperson urges caution, as misjudging the ice thickness can be dangerous.

Frozen Creeks in Recent Years

In recent years, the creeks in the Spreewald have occasionally frozen over, attracting visitors for ice skating and sledding. However, this should not be taken as a sign of widespread safety.

Factors Affecting Ice Thickness

The thickness of ice depends on several factors, including air temperature, wind speed, snow cover, and water movement. Fluctuating temperatures can significantly weaken ice surfaces, making them unsafe for human weight.

Dangers of Thin Ice

Attempting to walk or skate on thin ice can have life-threatening consequences. If the ice cracks or breaks, a person can quickly fall into the frigid water and become submerged. Hypothermia and drowning are major risks associated with thin ice accidents.

Responsibilities of Waterway Owners

Owners of waterways and property adjacent to bodies of water have a legal obligation to warn of potential dangers, including the presence of thin ice. They should post signs and use barriers to prevent people from accessing unsafe areas.

Conclusion

The DLRG and other authorities urge the public to take their warnings seriously and refrain from entering ice surfaces on Brandenburg waters until a safe ice thickness has been established. Ignoring these warnings can have tragic consequences.
