Escape Artist: Olga the Moose Still Roaming Wild in Brandenburg
Two months after escaping her enclosure at the Schorfheide Wildlife Park, the enigmatic elchkuh Olga remains at large in the surrounding wilderness. The park’s director, Imke Heyter, expressed dwindling hopes of locating the elusive moose, who has vanished without a trace since late January.
"I no longer have much hope that we’ll find her," Heyter said, acknowledging the challenges of tracking down a creature of Olga’s size and agility in such a vast and rugged landscape. Despite the slim prospects of recapture, Heyter remains optimistic about Olga’s survival chances in the wild.
"Olga is a highly adaptable animal with excellent instincts," Heyter explained. "Brandenburg offers a wealth of suitable habitats with ample food sources." In contrast, the park director noted that Olga would face far greater risks in more densely populated areas, such as the industrial city of Bottrop.
The elusiveness of a creature with Olga’s imposing stature has astounded park officials. Standing an impressive two meters tall at the shoulder, Olga has managed to conceal herself remarkably well since her escape. Heyter attributes this camouflage ability to the moose’s natural camouflage and innate survival instincts.
"Elks possess an uncanny ability to disappear into their surroundings," she said, referencing the limited sightings of Olga since her break for freedom. Heyter remains committed to the search, actively pursuing any credible leads and employing various capture techniques. However, she emphasizes that Olga’s well-being is her primary concern.
"If we are unable to retrieve her, I have full confidence in her ability to thrive in the wild," Heyter affirmed. "Her survival prospects are extremely high."
Olga’s escape from the Schorfheide Wildlife Park in mid-December made national headlines. After a brief 17-hour stay in her new enclosure, the moose breached the park’s fences and vanished into the surrounding countryside. Since then, Olga’s adventures have captivated the public, with her whereabouts remaining a constant topic of conversation in the region.
