The Second Wave: NFL Free Agency’s Bargain Hunt and Best Available Players
The initial frenzy of NFL free agency has subsided. The first wave, a tsunami of deals and signings fueled by the legal tampering period, has crashed. Many teams have already secured their primary targets, filling glaring holes and adding marquee talent to their rosters. However, the reality for many players is that they missed that first wave. They’re still on the market, waiting for their opportunity to contribute in the 2025 season.
While the biggest names may be off the board, the free agency period is far from over. In fact, it’s often in this second stage where shrewd general managers can find exceptional value. These players, perhaps overlooked in the initial rush or burdened by specific circumstances, represent potential bargains that could significantly impact a team’s fortunes. As the draft looms in April, the pressure will mount, forcing teams to finalize their rosters and address remaining needs. However, for now, the emphasis is on rounding out squads without overspending.
Here’s a look at some of the best remaining free agents and potential landing spots, considering team needs, cap space situations, and potential player fits.
1. Stefon Diggs (Wide Receiver)
Prediction: Dallas Cowboys
The initial expectation was a return to Houston for Diggs, but the Texans have apparently moved on. This leaves Diggs in a somewhat precarious situation, but still a valuable commodity. A move to Dallas makes a lot of sense geographically, allowing him to stay in Texas. More importantly, he would join his brother, Trevon Diggs, on the Cowboys roster. Dallas desperately needs another receiving threat alongside CeeDee Lamb, as their passing game lacked consistent potency last season. Diggs, coming off an ACL injury, may not command top-tier wide receiver money. The Cowboys have some cap space to play with and securing Diggs would address a major need heading into the draft.
2. Amari Cooper (Wide Receiver)
Prediction: Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks’ offseason moves have been puzzling, to say the least. They traded away veteran quarterback Geno Smith, only to replace him with Sam Darnold, whose performance under pressure has been consistently questioned. The release of Tyler Lockett and the trade of DK Metcalf paint a picture of a team potentially embarking on a rebuild. At best, the Seahawks resemble a construction site in the midst of renovations. Cooper, while perhaps not at the peak of his career, could provide a reliable receiving option for Darnold or a rookie quarterback Seattle might draft. He represents a solid, experienced player who could fill a significant void while the team potentially restocks the position in the draft.
3. Aaron Rodgers (Quarterback)
Prediction: Pittsburgh Steelers or Retirement
While the New York Giants have been mentioned as a possibility, the situation for Rodgers seems to boil down to Pittsburgh or retirement, unless the Minnesota Vikings make a late push. The Steelers offer Rodgers a chance to compete for a championship in 2025, bolstered by a strong defense and improving offense. While Rodgers has always enjoyed the spotlight, this offseason has a different feel. He looked like a player contemplating the end of his career in Week 18. The last two years haven’t gone according to plan, and retirement seems to be a very real consideration. The Steelers, with their existing foundation, might be the ideal fit if Rodgers is truly committed to playing. If his heart isn’t in it, a gold jacket and Canton are more likely destinations than Pittsburgh.
4. Donovan Smith (Offensive Tackle)
Prediction: Houston Texans
The Texans’ offensive line needs significant upgrades. Despite trading away Laremy Tunsil, the Texans are still in need of offensive line help. Protecting C.J. Stroud is paramount. Smith, though potentially less expensive than a top-tier free agent, could provide immediate help.
5. Keenan Allen (Wide Receiver)
Prediction: Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers have done little to address their need for a wide receiver this offseason. After missing out on other potential targets, a reunion with Allen makes sense. Allen, despite playing on a struggling Bears team, still demonstrated reliability. He could solidify a receiving room that needs more proven talent alongside Ladd McConkey.
6. Russell Wilson (Quarterback)
Prediction: New York Giants
Assuming Rodgers goes to Pittsburgh, Wilson’s options are dwindling. "Mr. Unlimited" is now anything but, and his performance with the Steelers was lackluster. The Giants, however, could offer him a chance to start or mentor a rookie quarterback. While he’s not the star he once was, Wilson can still play.
7. J.K. Dobbins (Running Back)
Prediction: Denver Broncos
The Broncos’ running game was abysmal in 2024. With Javonte Williams departing for Dallas, an opportunity arises for Dobbins. While he might not be Sean Payton’s ideal Alvin Kamara-type back, Dobbins could provide flexibility in the draft and bolster their rushing attack.
8. Justin Simmons (Safety)
Prediction: Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles need a safety after trading away C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Simmons, with experience under Vic Fangio, is a perfect fit for their defense.
9. Johnathan Abram (Safety)
Prediction: Washington Commanders
The safety carousel continues. With a vacancy in Dan Quinn’s defense, a position he always prioritizes.
10. Joe Thuney (Guard)
Prediction: New England Patriots
The Patriots are actively upgrading their roster, including the offensive line. Jenkins’ versatility could be of interest to the Patriots.
Notables
Cooper Kupp (Wide Receiver)
Prediction: New England Patriots
Despite not making the top 10, Kupp is still a notable name. A Super Bowl MVP, Kupp has been a solid contributor for the Rams.
The second wave of NFL free agency is a critical period. Teams that can identify and acquire undervalued talent now will be best positioned for success in the upcoming season. The draft is approaching, but these free agent bargains could prove to be the difference between a playoff contender and an also-ran.
