Two First Responders Injured While Rescuing Elderly Woman from Fire in Munich

Munich, Germany – Two first responders were injured while rescuing a critically injured woman from her apartment in Munich on Saturday, June 25, 2023.

The incident occurred when the responders, aged 21, 27, and 45, were visiting a resident of the apartment building, according to a police spokesperson. While inside the apartment, they heard a smoke alarm coming from another unit.

Without hesitation, the men rushed to the nearby apartment and forced open the door. Inside, they found an 80-year-old woman who had sustained severe burns.

During the rescue operation, the 27- and 45-year-old responders inhaled toxic smoke and suffered smoke inhalation injuries. They were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The 80-year-old woman was also transported to a hospital with life-threatening burns.

Initial investigations revealed that a plastic cutting board had been left on a hot stovetop, causing it to melt and ignite. The fire damaged both the stove and an overhead cabinet. However, the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
