Irish Jockey Michael O’Sullivan Dies Following Thurles Racecourse Fall

Dublin, Ireland (February 15, 2023) – The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) has announced the passing of 24-year-old jockey Michael O’Sullivan, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a fall at Thurles Racecourse on February 6th.

O’Sullivan, a promising young rider from County Cork, was competing in the Racing Again February 20th Handicap Chase when his mount stumbled and fell. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Despite the efforts of the medical team, O’Sullivan’s condition deteriorated, and he sadly passed away on Wednesday, February 15th.

The Irish racing community is in mourning over the tragic loss of O’Sullivan, who was widely respected and admired for his talent, dedication, and cheerful nature.

A Rising Star

Born in 1999, O’Sullivan began his riding career as an amateur, quickly establishing himself as a natural talent. He turned professional in 2022 and quickly made a name for himself, winning numerous races in Ireland and Britain.

His greatest triumph came in March 2023 when he guided Honeysuckle to victory in the prestigious Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. This landmark win marked O’Sullivan’s arrival as one of the most promising young jockeys in the sport.

Over the course of his brief but brilliant career, O’Sullivan amassed a total of 95 wins, a testament to his exceptional skill and determination.

Tributes Pour In

The IHRB expressed its profound condolences to O’Sullivan’s family and friends, describing him as "an exceptionally talented young rider who was always popular in the weighroom."

"Michael will be deeply missed by everyone in racing who had the pleasure of knowing him," said IHRB CEO Darragh O’Loughlin. "Our hearts go out to Michael’s family, especially his parents Bernadette and William and his brother Alan, who will feel his loss most keenly."

Trainer Willie Mullins, for whom O’Sullivan often rode, paid tribute to the young jockey’s remarkable talent and character.

"It’s dreadful news which puts all our problems into context. He will be much missed here and there is a real sadness here," Mullins said. "He was such a natural rider who was very modest, friendly, and understated."

"He had a great understanding of horses and racing and given the horse, he was the man," Mullins added. "He will be much missed in the yard and we have his family in our thoughts and our prayers are for them now."

Legacy of Inspiration and Compassion

In a poignant gesture, O’Sullivan’s family made the selfless decision to donate his organs, providing hope and healing to others in their time of grief.

"Michael’s success and his humility will have inspired many," said Dr. Jennifer Pugh, the IHRB’s chief medical officer. "I share the feeling of loss today with all those who knew him."

The outpouring of support and tributes from the racing community and beyond is a testament to the impact that Michael O’Sullivan made on the lives of those who knew him. His legacy as a skilled jockey and a compassionate human being will continue to inspire and touch the hearts of all who heard his story.
