Hilaria Baldwin Addresses "Cruel" Jokes About Her Heritage, Seemingly Calling Out Amy Schumer

Hilaria Baldwin is seemingly responding to comedian Amy Schumer after Schumer previously included her in a comedy routine that poked fun at Baldwin’s Spanish heritage. In her new book, "Manual Not Included," Baldwin delves into the emotional impact of being the subject of jokes that questioned her identity and cultural background. While Baldwin doesn’t explicitly name Schumer, she refers to a "famous person, someone I’ve never met, who said nasty and untrue things about me and my family," according to excerpts obtained by People magazine.

Baldwin writes that this unnamed celebrity mentioned her and her family in a "show" and "even tried to bait me and Alec via Instagram." She adds, "We didn’t engage with her and I guess I am proud of that. It made me mad at the system, but here, in this book, is where I can talk about it. I don’t need to use her name, and I don’t want any problems with her…" She labels the person a "total stranger" and expresses her desire to be "left out of any articles that mention her, because she has nothing to do with me…"

The controversy surrounding Baldwin’s heritage arose in 2020 when social media users questioned the authenticity of her claims to Spanish roots. Born Hillary Lynn Hayward-Thomas in Boston, she had previously stated she was born in Mallorca and moved to the United States at the age of 19 to attend New York University. Her accent and self-identification as Spanish were also scrutinized, leading to accusations of exaggerating or fabricating her background.

In her book, Baldwin claims that the intense public scrutiny surrounding the controversy took a significant toll on her health and well-being, leaving her physically ill with stress. She also writes that her children were brought to tears by the commentary. "It gutted me because I couldn’t understand how someone could be so inherently cruel," she states. Despite the hurt she experienced, Baldwin says, "I don’t need an apology… No matter what, I hope I never meet her."

The apparent target of Baldwin’s remarks, Amy Schumer, addressed the controversy in her April 2023 Netflix special, "Emergency Contact." During the special, Schumer asked the audience, "Do you guys know who Hilaria Baldwin is? I’m saying it wrong. I’m sorry," before adopting a Spanish accent to repeat Baldwin’s name.

Schumer then recounted meeting Hilaria "years ago" backstage at "Saturday Night Live." She said that when Alec Baldwin attempted to introduce his wife, Schumer responded, "No, thank you. I’m trying to hang on to my self-esteem, OK. She is a tiny Disney princess and I look like Ben Roethlisberger from most angles."

Schumer also mocked Baldwin’s accent and the names of her children. "She had a very thick, Spanish accent, from Spain. They have a von Trapp amount of children, and they named them all – I’m not sure, but very Spanish names like Jamón, Croqueta and Flamenco, you know. And all of this would be fine and beautiful, except that ‘Hilaria from España’ is actually Hillary from Boston."

The Baldwins have eight children: Carmen, Rafael, Leonardo, Romeo, Eduardo, María Lucía, and Ilaria. María Lucía was welcomed via surrogacy.

Schumer further commented on the situation by connecting it to the accidental shooting on the set of Alec Baldwin’s film "Rust," where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed. "My point is that all evidence points to this woman, since she met her husband, has straight up pretended to be from Spain. And her husband shot someone … now stay with me."

Alec Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023 in connection with the shooting.

Hilaria Baldwin has previously addressed the controversy surrounding her heritage, acknowledging the confusion and admitting that "culture, languages, sexual orientations, religions [and] political beliefs" are "allow[ed] to be fluid." In an Instagram post, she apologized for the confusion.

The article concludes by stating that representatives for Schumer and Baldwin did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
