Bayern Munich Goalkeeper Mala Grohs Opens Up About Rare Cancer Diagnosis
Maria Luisa "Mala" Grohs, the goalkeeper for FC Bayern Munich, has shared intimate details about her recent battle with a rare form of cancer. In an interview with Bavarian television’s "Blickpunkt Sport," the 23-year-old footballer described the initial uncertainty surrounding her diagnosis, the extensive search for the tumor’s origin, and the subsequent treatment she underwent.
"Initially, we didn’t know much about it because this type of cancer is so rare," said Grohs. "It took a long time to determine the source, which was crucial for the therapy." Finally, the tumor was located "in my tonsil and the affected lymph nodes."
Grohs first went public with her diagnosis of a "malignant tumor" in November 2022. She underwent surgery in December and returned to training in mid-January. A native of Münster, Germany, Grohs has played for Bayern since 2019, winning three German league championships during her tenure. In October 2022, she was called up to the German national team by coach Christian Wück but was forced to decline due to her tonsil surgery.
"I never had a moment where I thought, ‘Oh my God, this could really take my life,’" Grohs admitted. However, she acknowledged that since her return to training, she has noticed a diminished "mental capacity" that she attributes to the emotional toll of her experience.
Despite these challenges, Grohs has already made a return to the pitch, playing for Bayern II in the second division and serving as a substitute during their DFB Cup victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Grohs’s decision to share her story is both courageous and inspiring. She hopes that by speaking out about her rare cancer, she can raise awareness and provide support to others facing similar challenges.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Initially, Grohs experienced a persistent swelling in her throat. After consulting with multiple specialists, she was finally diagnosed with a malignant tumor in her tonsil and lymph nodes. Due to the rarity of this type of cancer, it took an extensive search and biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.
Grohs’s treatment plan involved surgery to remove the tumor and affected lymph nodes. She underwent a tonsillectomy, as well as the removal of several lymph nodes in her neck. The surgery was successful, and Grohs is now cancer-free.
Recovery and Return to Training
Following her surgery, Grohs underwent a rigorous rehabilitation program to regain her strength and fitness. She also received ongoing medical care and monitoring to ensure that the cancer had not returned.
In mid-January, Grohs was cleared to return to training with Bayern Munich. She has since played in several matches for Bayern II and has been named as a substitute for the first team.
Mental Health and Resilience
Grohs has been candid about the emotional toll that her cancer diagnosis and treatment have taken on her. She has experienced anxiety, depression, and insomnia. However, she has also found strength and resilience in the support of her family, friends, and teammates.
Grohs credits her positive mindset and determination with helping her overcome the challenges she has faced. She has also emphasized the importance of seeking professional help when needed.
Advocacy and Awareness
Grohs is now committed to raising awareness about rare cancers and providing support to others facing similar challenges. She has spoken out publicly about her experience and has partnered with organizations that provide information and resources to cancer patients and their families.
Grohs’s story is a reminder that cancer can strike anyone, regardless of age or background. It also highlights the importance of early detection, proper treatment, and ongoing support. By sharing her journey, Grohs is helping to break down the stigma associated with cancer and empowering others to take charge of their health.
