Tragic Car Crash Leaves Mother and Son Dead, Elderly Driver Facing Charges
Berlin, Germany – Almost a year after a horrific car accident on March 9, 2024, that claimed the lives of a 41-year-old mother and her four-year-old son, prosecutors have filed charges against an 83-year-old male driver.
Reckless Driving and Fatal Consequences
According to the State Prosecutor’s Office, the elderly driver was recklessly speeding on the Bus Spur on Leipziger Straße in Berlin. Instead of adhering to the 30 kilometers per hour (18.6 miles per hour) speed limit, he accelerated to a staggering speed of 70 kilometers per hour (43.5 miles per hour), possibly even reaching 90 kilometers per hour (56 miles per hour).
His reckless behavior continued as he veered onto the bike lane, overtaking and damaging two parked cars. At an alarming speed of 89 kilometers per hour (55.3 miles per hour), he fatally struck the mother and son as they attempted to cross Leipziger Straße. Both victims succumbed to their injuries shortly after the impact.
The tragic accident left another five individuals injured. The elderly driver’s erratic driving also caused him to collide with another vehicle, critically injuring its occupant.
Charges of Negligence
The State Prosecutor’s Office has charged the elderly driver with two counts of negligent homicide and five counts of negligent bodily injury. The prosecution alleges that the driver intentionally sped and recklessly bypassed other vehicles. Had he maintained a reasonable speed, the accident could have been averted.

The boyfriend of the deceased mother and her sister witnessed the horrific crash firsthand. They were treated for shock in a nearby hospital. The family, hailing from Belgium, was visiting Berlin as tourists.
In the upcoming trial, the boyfriend and sister will serve as joint plaintiffs. Their lawyer has stated that their presence in Berlin for the proceedings is still undetermined.

Immediately following the accident, a breathalyzer test administered to the elderly driver revealed no traces of alcohol. His driver’s license was revoked, and the vehicle involved in the crash was impounded.
