Zelenskyy Rejects Talks with Russian Negotiators, Demands Putin Meeting

Ukrainian President Zelensky Declines Meeting with Russian Negotiators, Demands Talks with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared his unwillingness to engage in peace talks with Russian intermediaries, insisting on direct negotiations with President Vladimir Putin and a comprehensive plan developed in conjunction with former US President Donald Trump.

Zelensky outlined these conditions during the Munich Security Conference, stating that Ukraine requires robust security guarantees before pursuing a ceasefire. He emphasized that the aim is not simply to end hostilities but to secure a lasting peace that prevents the resumption of conflict in Eastern Europe.

The Ukrainian leader stressed the importance of genuine guarantees, describing his discussions with US Vice President J.D. Vance as "positive." He expressed optimism about continued dialogue between the two sides.

Trump had previously initiated contact with Putin, arranging immediate negotiations to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, the details of these potential talks remain undisclosed.

Putin has downplayed the possibility of negotiating with Zelensky, questioning his legitimacy as Ukraine’s president and stating that his term has expired. Ukrainian legal experts maintain that the extension of Zelensky’s authority under martial law is valid, and Western nations continue to recognize him as the legitimate head of state.

Should Zelensky choose to participate, Putin has indicated his intention to delegate representatives for negotiations.

Following the Russian annexation of Ukrainian territories in September 2022, Zelensky issued a decree declaring talks with Putin impossible until a new Russian president emerges. The Ukrainian president’s insistence on a direct meeting with Putin stems from the belief that any other arrangement would compromise Ukraine’s interests.

Julia Navalnaya, the Russian opposition leader and widow of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, echoed Zelensky’s concerns, cautioning against negotiations with Putin. She described him as a treacherous figure who will ultimately manipulate the process to Ukraine’s detriment.

The conflict in Ukraine has persisted for nearly three years, with Russia’s invasion causing widespread suffering and destruction. The outcome of the ongoing diplomatic efforts remains uncertain, with the fate of Ukraine and the region hanging in the balance.
