Tragedy Strikes Pennsylvania Hospital: Gunman Kills Police Officer, Wounds Others

In a chilling turn of events, a gunman opened fire at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County, Pennsylvania, on Saturday morning, claiming the life of a beloved police officer and injuring at least five others.

The Incident:

At approximately 10:45 a.m., shots rang out at the hospital’s intensive care unit, sending shockwaves through the community. Ted Czech, a public information officer at York County’s Office of Emergency Management, confirmed that authorities responded to a 911 call regarding an "active threat."

Suspect Identified:

The perpetrator, identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, 49, allegedly entered the hospital armed with a semiautomatic weapon and armed with zip ties. According to York County District Attorney Tim Barker, the suspect held a female nurse at gunpoint and bound her hands with zip ties.

"Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to West York Borough Police Officer, Andrew Duarte’s family and all of our brothers and sisters in the West York Borough Police Department that have lost a comrade and friend, and furthermore our fellow Borough agencies that have lost a colleague."

Hospital Secured, No Patient Injuries:

Hospital spokesperson Susan Manko confirmed that no patients were injured in the incident. Law enforcement swiftly apprehended the gunman and secured the premises. Manko expressed gratitude to local law enforcement agencies for their prompt response.

Swift Response from Officials:

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences and acknowledged the heroics of those involved. He met with Officer Duarte’s parents and honored his life, which was "cut far too short."

"In the midst of senseless violence, law enforcement, first responders, and medical professionals showed true heroism," Shapiro said.

FBI Director’s Tribute:

Newly-confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel paid tribute to Officer Duarte and two other police officers who were fatally shot in Virginia Beach over the weekend:

"Tonight, I spoke with the respective Police Chiefs. Tonight, and always, we honor our men and women who wear the badge. Tonight, please send prayers to their families and communities. The FBI will provide whatever support is needed. We will never forget them, rest in peace."
