Winter Weekend: Brace for Cold, Snow, and Hint of Sunshine

Wintry Weekend with Cold, Snow, and Sun

The weekend promises a true winter experience, characterized by cold temperatures, snow, and occasional sunshine. According to meteorologist Marcel Schmid of the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach, it’s essential to keep warm gear like scarves and hats on hand.

Frosty East, Milder West

Persistent frost is expected in the eastern regions of Germany, while the west and southwest will enjoy slightly warmer temperatures. DWD predicts highs ranging from -2°C (28°F) in the Erzgebirge mountains to +5°C (41°F) in the Lower Rhine region on Saturday. Snow is anticipated primarily along the coasts.

Chilly Nights

After sunset, temperatures will plummet significantly, particularly in the east and south. Severe frost is likely, with lows of -10°C to -15°C (14°F to 5°F) in these areas. "Locally, it could get even colder," Schmid warned.

Sunshine on Sunday

Sunday will bring more sunshine, although snow flurries are still possible in central Germany. The northeast will continue to experience light, persistent frost, while the southwest will see temperatures between -1°C and +5°C (30°F and 41°F), with the warmest weather along the Rhine and Mosel rivers.

Snowy Monday Night

Light snowfall and icy conditions are possible in the south on Monday night. The rest of the country should remain dry and clear. Temperatures will drop to -12°C (10°F) in the east, and even lower in areas with snow.

Sunny Start to the Week

The sun will continue to shine in many places at the start of the week, according to DWD meteorologist Schmid. "Temperature levels will remain largely unchanged, with the west-east gradient persisting." Eastern and northern regions will experience highs of -4°C to 0°C (25°F to 32°F), while the rest of the country will be slightly warmer, with temperatures ranging from -1°C to +5°C (30°F to 41°F).

Milder Temperatures Mid-Week

"Double-digit highs are already possible again in the west by mid-week, and the freezing point will be exceeded during the day even in the east," Schmid said. However, nights will continue to be cold.
