East Germany Remains Frozen as Western Germany Anticipates Spring Fever

While eastern Germany continues to endure icy conditions, the western parts of the country are eagerly anticipating the arrival of spring. The German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach predicts that a surge of warm air will sweep across western Germany in the coming days, bringing temperatures well into the double digits.

"On Friday, we could even see temperatures as high as 19 degrees Celsius in the west," announced DWD media meteorologist Sonja Stöckle.

Despite the impending warm spell, nights in Germany will initially remain frigid. "Clear skies and dry air will guarantee plenty of sunlight and warmth during the day, while the nights will be icy and cloudless," explained Stöckle. On Wednesday, daytime highs will range between 2 and 5 degrees Celsius, rising to 8 degrees in the west. Eastern Germany, however, will likely experience persistent frost, with highs hovering around 0 degrees Celsius.

A significant weather shift is expected in the west on Wednesday, according to the DWD. Cloud formations from France will herald the approach of a warm front, bringing milder temperatures, dense cloud cover, and light rain. The first light showers are possible in western and southwestern Germany overnight into Thursday, with the potential for icy conditions.

The warm front will advance at a slow pace, reaching eastern Germany only on Friday, as Stöckle noted. The risk of black ice persists, especially at night and in the early morning hours. Despite sunny conditions, eastern Germany will see temperatures of just 2 to 5 degrees Celsius on Thursday. In contrast, western Germany will bask in temperatures exceeding 10 degrees Celsius, climbing as high as 15 degrees.

Friday’s forecast predicts heavy cloud cover and eastward-moving rain in northern Germany. Central Germany will experience some cloud clearing during the day, with intermittent light precipitation. Southern Germany will see partly cloudy skies and dry conditions after the morning fog dissipates.

Eastern and southeastern Germany can expect highs of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, while the rest of the country will enjoy temperatures between 10 and 16 degrees. In the western and southwestern river valleys, temperatures could soar as high as 18 or even 19 degrees Celsius, according to the DWD. Overnight into Saturday, temperatures will drop to 10 degrees Celsius in the Lower Rhine region and -5 degrees Celsius in the Bavarian Forest.
