Vermont Republicans Seek Disciplinary Action Against Democrats Over Disrupted Detrans Awareness Day Event

The Green Mountain State has become the latest battleground in the ongoing cultural and political divide surrounding transgender issues, with Vermont Republicans calling for the discipline or resignation of two Democratic state representatives they accuse of orchestrating a disruptive protest during a Detrans Awareness Day event held at the State House.

The Vermont Family Alliance, a conservative advocacy group, organized the event to provide resources and information related to detransitioning, the process of reversing a gender transition. However, the meeting was met with fierce opposition from transgender rights advocates and their allies, who view detransitioning as a sensitive and complex issue that should not be used to undermine the rights and well-being of transgender individuals.

According to Vermont Republican Party Chair Paul Dame, State Representatives Mari Cordes of Lincoln and Jubilee McGill of Middlebury actively participated in the disruption, which quickly gained national attention, particularly on conservative media outlets like Fox News.

Video footage circulating online, including clips featured on Fox News Channel’s “Jesse Watters Primetime,” shows individuals dressed in women’s clothing singing loudly and protesters shouting, effectively drowning out the speaker, Renee McGuiness, who was addressing the audience with a microphone.

Dame expressed his outrage, stating that "intentionally recruiting people – that crosses the line for me." He accused Cordes and McGill of abusing their positions as legislators to sabotage a peaceful informational meeting held by a group with differing viewpoints.

The controversy stems from a Facebook post on a Middlebury Pride page that called for individuals to "push back against transphobic bigots and their lies" by attending a "trans dance at the Statehouse" on the day of the Detrans Awareness Day event. The post encouraged participants to "make our presence known" and declared that "Trans joy is rebellious. Trans joy is irrepressible."

Adding fuel to the fire, McGill posted a comment on the Facebook page that included the official schedule for the room where the Detrans Awareness Day event was being held. Her comment specifically mentioned concerns about potential disruptions to a meeting with pages scheduled earlier that day, indicating awareness of planned protests.

The Republicans argue that McGill’s actions, coupled with the Facebook post, demonstrate a coordinated effort to disrupt the Detrans Awareness Day event and stifle the voices of those sharing their experiences with detransitioning.

Dame has called on House Speaker Jill Krowinski, a Democrat representing Burlington, to consider disciplining Cordes and McGill for creating what he described as an "unnecessary debacle." While some have criticized Sergeant-at-Arms Agatha Kessler for her handling of the situation, Dame defended her actions, stating that she acted responsibly and is politically impartial.

In response to the controversy, Senate Majority Leader Kesha Ram Hinsdale and House Majority Leader Lori Houghton, both Democrats representing Chittenden, issued a joint statement reaffirming their "unwavering commitment to the rights and freedoms of all Vermonters." They emphasized that "personal health decisions and gender identity are deeply personal matters – not political talking points" and that "every individual deserves the dignity and respect to make these choices free from public scrutiny, interference, or government overreach."

Hinsdale separately added that "trans Vermonters [have a] right to access the medical care, safety, and legal protections they deserve" and rejected "any efforts to turn their existence into a political debate."

McGuiness, the speaker at the Detrans Awareness Day event, has demanded an apology from Houghton and Hinsdale for what she claims was a "mischaracterization of our event as an attack on the transgender community."

The controversy surrounding the Detrans Awareness Day event and the subsequent protests has exposed deep divisions within Vermont’s political landscape and highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding transgender issues. The incident has sparked a debate about free speech, the right to protest, and the responsibilities of elected officials.

The Republicans’ call for disciplinary action against Cordes and McGill is likely to further inflame tensions and could have significant political ramifications for both the Democratic and Republican parties in Vermont. The outcome of this situation will undoubtedly be closely watched by political observers and activists across the country as they grapple with the complex and often contentious issues surrounding gender identity and transgender rights.
