Valentine’s Day Brings Millions in Sales to Schleswig-Holstein’s Retail Sector
Schleswig-Holstein, Germany: As Valentine’s Day approaches on February 14th, the retail industry in Schleswig-Holstein is anticipating a significant surge in sales. According to Mareike Petersen, spokesperson for the Handelsverband Nord (HVN), an industry association representing retailers in Northern Germany, the region’s retailers expect a boost of 49 million euros in additional revenue.
Nationwide Umsatz Estimated at 1.3 Billion Euros
On a national level, the HVN estimates that Valentine’s Day-related sales will reach an impressive 1.3 billion euros. Petersen emphasizes that while traditional gifts such as flower bouquets and plants remain popular, the highest sales are typically generated in the grocery sector. Chocolates, pralines, and champagne are among the most sought-after Valentine’s Day treats. Gift certificates, decorative items, and even watches and jewelry also contribute to the day’s increased consumer spending.
Growing Significance for the Retail Industry
"Valentine’s Day has gained increasing importance for the retail industry in recent years and has become a relatively lucrative sales event," notes Petersen. She cites a significant increase in the number of people making Valentine’s Day purchases, from 17% in 2020 to 28% today. The sales volume associated with the holiday is now comparable to that of Mother’s Day.
Cautious Outlook for 2023
Despite the anticipated Valentine’s Day boost, Petersen expresses concerns about the overall state of the retail sector at the beginning of 2023. "We are approaching the new year with apprehension due to various uncertainties that make it challenging to provide a reliable forecast," she explains. "The Christmas season did not meet our expectations, and we are monitoring the situation closely."
HVN: Advocating for Northern German Retailers
