International Coalition Forms to Plan Ukraine Peacekeeping Force, Trump Engages in Diplomatic Push

A U.K.-France-led coalition of the willing is actively developing a plan for a peacekeeping force in Ukraine, signaling a significant step towards potentially de-escalating the long-standing conflict. Senior military officers from various countries are collaborating to formulate the specifics of this operation. While the United Kingdom and France have explicitly stated their willingness to deploy troops, other nations, including Canada, Australia, Finland, and additional European countries, are reportedly considering involvement, according to the Associated Press.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the coalition is transitioning into its operational phase, indicating progress in the planning process. The precise number of troops that will be deployed remains undetermined, but sources suggest a potential range of 10,000 to 30,000 personnel, as reported by the AP.

Simultaneously, former U.S. President Donald Trump has engaged in a series of diplomatic conversations with key international leaders regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump held separate discussions with Prime Minister Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. A spokesperson for Starmer told Reuters that Trump reiterated the importance of collaborative efforts to secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine during his call with the U.K. leader.

Macron also confirmed a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, highlighting Zelenskyy’s "courage" in accepting the U.S.-brokered deal. Macron emphasized the necessity of working with international partners to develop a comprehensive peace plan that provides strong security guarantees for Ukraine, ensures lasting peace in the region, and prevents future Russian aggression. In a post on X, Macron underscored the urgency of achieving a lasting resolution to the conflict.

However, Russia has expressed reservations regarding the presence of troops from NATO nations in Ukraine as part of any peace agreement, according to the AP. Throughout the war, the Kremlin has consistently opposed Ukraine’s potential membership in NATO. Earlier this week, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko reiterated this stance, asserting that Russia demands an "ironclad" guarantee that Ukraine will not join NATO, as reported by Reuters.

Trump, who has pledged to end the three-year war, also engaged in direct communication with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin this week. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described his conversation with Zelenskyy as "very good," noting that they discussed his preceding call with Putin. Trump indicated that the discussions were primarily focused on aligning the requests and needs of both Russia and Ukraine, based on the previous conversation with Putin.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt provided further details regarding Trump’s call with Putin, stating that the two leaders agreed that the war "needs to end with a lasting peace." Leavitt added that Trump and Putin also discussed the importance of improving U.S.-Russian relations.

The dual developments of the international coalition’s peacekeeping plan and Trump’s diplomatic engagement suggest a renewed effort to find a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The success of these initiatives will depend on the ability of involved parties to overcome existing obstacles and reach a mutually acceptable agreement.

The proposed peacekeeping force, if implemented, could play a crucial role in maintaining stability and preventing further escalation of the conflict. However, the specific mandate, composition, and deployment timeline of the force will need to be carefully considered and agreed upon by all relevant stakeholders.

Trump’s involvement in diplomatic discussions also presents both opportunities and challenges. His direct communication with both Putin and Zelenskyy could potentially facilitate dialogue and bridge divides. However, his approach to international relations and his past statements regarding the conflict may raise concerns among some parties.

Ultimately, the path towards a lasting peace in Ukraine will require a multifaceted approach that involves diplomacy, security measures, and a commitment to addressing the underlying causes of the conflict. The international community must work together to support Ukraine in its pursuit of a just and sustainable resolution. The coming weeks and months will be critical in determining whether these efforts can yield tangible progress towards ending the war and securing lasting peace in the region. The involvement of multiple actors, from the U.K. and France to the U.S. and other European nations, underscores the global significance of the conflict and the shared responsibility to find a peaceful resolution. The conversations happening, as mentioned by different leaders, from Trump to Macron and Starmer, are a key to understanding different approaches to solving the problems.
