Democrats’ Resistance to Trump’s Address Fuels Criticism and Concerns Over Poll Numbers

Recent analysis suggests that the Democratic Party’s visible resistance to President Donald Trump during his address to Congress is drawing criticism and raising concerns about the party’s standing in public opinion polls. Mark Penn, a former advisor to President Bill Clinton and a seasoned pollster, voiced his concerns on Fox & Friends, asserting that the Democrats’ refusal to applaud or acknowledge unifying moments during Trump’s speech is contributing to a decline in their poll numbers.

Penn highlighted the contrast between the Republicans’ strategic use of applause and silence during the address and what he perceived as the Democrats’ apparent inability to recognize and respond appropriately to moments that transcended partisan divides. "They didn’t know how to applaud when you’re supposed to applaud," Penn observed, emphasizing the importance of recognizing unifying themes.

He further noted that Trump’s approval ratings have been gradually increasing in his polls, driven by the popularity of several policy proposals outlined in the speech. Simultaneously, Democratic ratings have experienced a noticeable decline, reaching what Penn described as "record lows." He attributed this decline, in part, to the Democrats’ perceived "amateurish" behavior during the address, which he believes alienated a significant portion of the public.

Penn clarified that while the official Democratic response delivered by Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan was "not so bad," the overall performance of Democrats in the hall during Trump’s speech had a negative impact on viewers. This underscores the importance of both the message and the manner in which it is delivered, suggesting that the Democrats’ visible opposition overshadowed the content of their rebuttal.

His views are expanded upon in an op-ed piece written for Fox News where he claims that Trump is "gradually winning over the public" and the Democratic Party and the legacy of President Biden are in "free fall".

Adding to the sense of unease, specific instances of disruption during Trump’s address drew widespread condemnation. Rep. Al Green of Texas, who has previously filed impeachment articles against Trump, interrupted the speech by shouting and waving his cane, leading to his removal from the chamber.

Furthermore, Republican lawmakers criticized their Democratic colleagues for their failure to acknowledge or applaud the presence of special guests invited to the address, including a 13-year-old cancer survivor. Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama expressed her disappointment, stating that it was "heartbreaking" to witness the lack of support and recognition for these individuals.

The Democrats’ official response, delivered by Sen. Slotkin, focused on rebuking Trump’s handling of the war in Ukraine and his pursuit of a peace deal with Russia. Slotkin invoked the legacy of President Ronald Reagan, arguing that true strength lies in combining military and economic power with moral clarity. She concluded her remarks by asserting that Trump’s approach would have led to the loss of the Cold War, praising Reagan’s role in shaping the geopolitical landscape.

The events surrounding Trump’s address to Congress highlight a growing divide within the American political landscape. The Democrats’ strategy of resisting Trump at every turn has come under scrutiny, with critics arguing that it alienates moderate voters and contributes to a negative perception of the party.

The key issue appears to be the balance between principled opposition and the need to demonstrate unity and a willingness to work together on areas of common ground. The public’s perception of a party’s ability to govern effectively is often shaped by its willingness to engage in constructive dialogue and compromise.

As the political climate continues to evolve, the Democratic Party faces the challenge of recalibrating its approach to opposing Trump. This will require a nuanced strategy that balances the need to challenge policies with the desire to project an image of competence and unity. Failure to do so may result in further erosion of support and continued struggles in the polls. The party will also have to determine what they are standing against vs what they are standing for to turn the current narrative around.
