Trump to Meet with Putin in Saudi Arabia for Ukraine War Resolution

US President Trump Plans to Meet with Russian President Putin to Discuss Resolution for Ukraine Conflict

United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to explore a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The meeting, according to Trump, is scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia "in the not too distant future."

Trump’s announcement came following a phone conversation with Putin that lasted over an hour. During the call, the US President expressed his belief that both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy were interested in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict.

"I think that President Putin wants to see it end. I think President Zelenskyy wants to see it end," Trump said during a press conference at the White House. "So we’re going to try to do something."

Trump indicated that the meeting would initially take place in Saudi Arabia, with potential reciprocal visits between the two leaders following. He emphasized his desire to see an end to the bloodshed in Ukraine.

"I would like to see the killing of people stop," Trump stated.

Views from the Pentagon and Kiev

Prior to Trump’s announcement, US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper had downplayed the possibility of Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), deeming it "unrealistic" given the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Meanwhile, in a separate video address, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy expressed his confidence in the power of the United States to bring about peace in Ukraine.

"I believe in the strength of the United States of America, that together with Ukraine and our partners, it can force Russia and President Putin to find peace," Zelenskyy said.

He described his phone conversation with Trump as "a good and long conversation" and expressed hope that the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin would yield positive results.

Saudi Arabia as a Neutral Venue

The choice of Saudi Arabia as the venue for the meeting between Trump and Putin underscores the kingdom’s efforts to maintain its position as a neutral broker in regional conflicts. Saudi Arabia has cultivated close ties with both the United States and Russia, and has previously been involved in mediating peace negotiations.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Russia over the Ukraine crisis, which has sparked concerns about a wider military conflict in Europe. The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on Russia in response to its annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

International Pressure for a Resolution

The international community has been urging both Russia and Ukraine to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict, which has resulted in the deaths of over 13,000 people since it began in 2014. A ceasefire agreement brokered in 2015 has been repeatedly violated, and sporadic fighting continues in eastern Ukraine.

The meeting between Trump and Putin is seen as a potential breakthrough in efforts to end the conflict. However, analysts caution that significant obstacles remain, including the issue of Crimea, which Russia has annexed and Ukraine considers to be part of its territory.

The upcoming meeting will be closely watched by the international community, as it could potentially set the stage for a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis. The United States and Russia have a significant role to play in fostering peace in Eastern Europe, and a resolution to the conflict would be a major diplomatic victory for both leaders.
