UNLV Football Mourns the Loss of Ben Christman
The UNLV Rebels football program is in mourning following the tragic loss of offensive lineman Ben Christman, who passed away at the age of 21. Christman’s passing was announced by the university on Wednesday, January 18th, 2024.
Discovery of Christman’s Passing
Christman was found unresponsive in an off-campus apartment on Tuesday morning, January 17th, 2024. Authorities were summoned, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Transfer to UNLV
Christman had recently transferred to UNLV from the University of Kentucky for his final year of eligibility. He was a highly touted offensive lineman, having been ranked as the top prospect in Ohio by 247Sports Composite when he originally signed with Ohio State University as part of their 2021 recruiting class.
Early Career
Christman commenced his collegiate career at Ohio State University but transferred to Kentucky following the 2022 season. During his time with the Buckeyes, he played in one game, appearing against Indiana during his redshirt freshman season.
Season at Kentucky
In his two seasons with Kentucky, Christman appeared in a total of 13 games, mostly contributing on special teams. However, he was sidelined for the entire 2023 season due to a knee injury sustained prior to the season’s commencement.
Impact at UNLV
Christman was set to play a significant role for UNLV’s offensive line in 2024. He had impressed his teammates and coaches during his brief time on campus, earning a place on the Leadership Committee.

UNLV football coach Dan Mullen expressed his profound sorrow over Christman’s passing:
"Our team’s heart is broken to hear of Ben’s passing. Since the day he set foot on our campus, he made the Rebels a better program. Ben was an easy choice for our Leadership Committee as he had earned the immediate respect, admiration, and friendship of all his teammates. Our prayers go out to his family and all who knew him. Ben made the world a better place and he will be missed."
UNLV athletic director Erick Harper also shared his condolences:
"We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of Ben Christman, a new member of our football program and UNLV community. Ben recently joined us as a transfer student and had already made a meaningful impact on his teammates and coaches. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates during this extremely difficult time. Counseling services are being provided for anyone in need."
Cause of Death and Investigation
The Clark County Coroner’s Office is currently investigating the cause of Christman’s death. No official determination has been released as of yet.
