Tory Lanez Reportedly Hospitalized After Prison Attack
Rapper Tory Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, is reportedly hospitalized following an attack at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, where he is serving a 10-year sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. The incident occurred early Monday morning, according to authorities.
Pedro Calderon Michel, a spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, confirmed that Lanez was attacked within a housing unit at the prison around 7:20 a.m. While Michel did not disclose the specific nature of the attack, a message posted on Lanez’s Instagram account later that evening provided a graphic account of the incident.
The Instagram post claimed that Lanez was stabbed 14 times and suffered collapsed lungs. Despite the severity of the alleged injuries, the post stated that Lanez was breathing on his own and was in relatively good spirits, expressing gratitude to God for his survival. The message further detailed that Lanez was stabbed in the back, torso, head, and face.
Prison staff provided immediate medical assistance to Lanez and contacted emergency services. He was subsequently transported to an outside hospital for treatment. The prison’s investigative unit and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office have launched an investigation into the attack.
The California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, located approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert, houses around 1,700 inmates classified as medium- and maximum-security. The facility has a history of violence, which raises questions about the circumstances surrounding the attack on Lanez and the measures in place to ensure inmate safety.
Lanez’s imprisonment stems from his conviction in December 2022 on three felony charges: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. These charges were related to the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete.
During the trial, Megan Thee Stallion testified that Lanez shot her in the feet following an argument after they left a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills home. She stated that Lanez fired the gun at her as she walked away from an SUV, yelling for her to dance. Megan sustained bullet fragments in both feet, requiring surgical removal. She initially hesitated to identify Lanez as the shooter but eventually publicly named him months after the incident.
Lanez’s legal team filed a motion for a new trial, which was rejected by the judge. They are currently appealing his conviction. The attorneys have yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the prison attack.
Prior to the attack, Megan Thee Stallion accused Lanez of harassing her from prison through surrogates. In response, a judge issued a protective order in January, effective through 2030, prohibiting Lanez from any form of contact or harassment towards Megan.
Tory Lanez, a 32-year-old Canadian rapper, began his career in 2009 with the release of mixtapes. He gradually gained popularity, eventually signing with a major label and releasing albums, two of which reached the top 10 on Billboard’s charts.
The case surrounding the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion ignited a significant controversy within the hip-hop community. It brought to the forefront several sensitive issues, including the reluctance of Black victims to cooperate with law enforcement, gender dynamics within the hip-hop industry, online harassment, and the impact of misogynoir, a specific form of misogyny directed towards Black women.
The trial itself was marked by drama, with friends and family members of Lanez expressing their belief that he was a victim of the justice system and the influence of Megan Thee Stallion’s powerful connections, particularly her management by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.
Following the verdict announcement, Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson, erupted in anger, denouncing the prosecutors and the legal system before being forcibly removed from the courtroom amidst a chaotic scene. He later issued an apology to the judge for his outburst.
Megan Thee Stallion, now 30, had already established herself as a rising star before the shooting. Her career has continued to flourish since the incident, and she has achieved significant success, including winning a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2021. She has also had No. 1 singles with "Savage," featuring Beyoncé, and as a guest artist on Cardi B’s "WAP."
The investigation into the attack on Tory Lanez in prison is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as authorities continue their inquiry. The incident raises concerns about inmate safety within correctional facilities and the potential for violence, even against high-profile individuals. The outcome of the investigation and any potential charges against those responsible for the attack remain to be seen.
