Sharper Than a Needle: Transforming Textile Machinery into Electro-Techno Music

The rhythmic clatter of sewing machines, the whir of knitting needles, the hum of motors, and the sharp snip of scissors—these everyday sounds of textile production might not immediately come to mind as the ingredients of music. However, the project "Sharper Than a Needle" defies this notion, crafting an innovative blend of electro and techno from these industrial tools.

"We don’t use any canned beats," emphasizes Stephanie Müller, a member of the ensemble "Dressed in Sound," which includes Berlin-based artist Lisa Simpson. "We only use the machines themselves."

On February 23rd, the ensemble, along with a choir and other collaborators, will showcase their project at the Münchner Kammerspiele. The performance promises a sonic exploration that weaves together textiles and their processing. Microphones amplify the sounds of the machinery, which are then transformed into music through a mixing console. The result is a symphony of textures, ranging from shrill to gentle to offbeat.

A humble sewing machine becomes a synthesizer. A grand sewing box serves as a drum set. Spinning wheels and flax, when combined with conductive wool, produce ethereal notes.

Stecknadeln, or dressmaker’s pins, tremble into motion with the help of magnets, creating a sound akin to the crackling of chocolate in the mouth. As the carriage of a knitting machine slides back and forth, it generates a bassline for a techno beat. Sensors respond to touch, contributing further to the sonic tapestry.

The auditory experience is complemented by visual elements, including video projections and the physical movements of the performers.

Munich, according to the Kammerspiele, is considered the birthplace of sewing machine music within a global network of artists. The project’s creators aim to challenge the production conditions of textiles while creating immersive experiences that stimulate all senses. Müller, Klaus Erika Dietl, Karen Modrei, and Stefan Wischnewski form the core of "Dressed in Sound."

Lisa Simpson, based in Berlin, has been playing her sewing machine as a musical instrument since 2003, repurposing discarded clothing into new creations. Operating under the artist name Agente Costura, she sparks conversations about the sustainability of the fashion industry.

Müller emphasizes the importance of bringing the actual tools of textile work onto the stage, amidst a colorful chaos of machines, sewing supplies, and dressmaker’s dummies. This labor, she notes, often remains invisible.

"Usually, you only get to see the beautiful finished garment," says Müller. "Our project highlights the political and social context of textile production."

The performers encourage letting go of old patterns, embracing change, and not shying away from innovation. Müller believes that the project embodies a broader message: "Don’t give up and don’t be afraid."

Beyond the Sonic Realm

"Sharper Than a Needle" extends beyond its electro-techno creations, incorporating elements of performance art and social commentary. The artists use their unique musical approach to raise awareness about the often-hidden realities of textile manufacturing.

Müller points to the environmental consequences of fast fashion, highlighting the need for more sustainable practices in the industry. By giving voice to the unseen labor behind our clothing, the project sheds light on the human and ecological costs of producing garments.

The use of old and recycled textiles in the performances serves as a reminder of the importance of repair, reuse, and upcycling. The artists encourage audiences to consider the full lifecycle of the clothes they wear and to make choices that contribute to a more sustainable fashion system.

Overall, "Sharper Than a Needle" is a multi-sensory experience that pushes the boundaries of music and art while provoking reflection on our relationship with the textiles that surround us.
