The Schaffermahlzeit: A Culinary and Social Tradition at the Bremen Rathaus
Origins and Purpose
The Schaffermahlzeit, held annually at the historic Bremen Rathaus, is a venerable tradition dating back to 1545. Its origins lie in the charitable endeavors of the Stiftung Haus Seefahrt, a foundation established to support seafarers, their families, and underprivileged nautical students.
Preparations and Organization
The preparation for this grand event is meticulously planned by three Schaffer (organizers) chosen for the year. For approximately eight months, they undertake a myriad of tasks, including extending invitations to guests, selecting beverages, arranging security measures, and crafting speeches. As Schaffer Thorsten Rönner remarked, "The preparation is indeed demanding."
The Festive Meal
The 481st Schaffermahlzeit will gather 100 sea captains, 100 merchants, and 100 guests from around the world. Over the course of approximately five hours, they will indulge in a traditional maritime feast of chicken soup, stockfish, and other delicacies, all served according to a strictly adhered-to schedule.
During the meal, speeches are delivered and donations are collected for the Stiftung Haus Seefahrt. These funds serve as a lifeline for seafarers in need, their families, and aspiring nautical students facing financial challenges.
Exclusive Guest List
The Schaffermahlzeit is an exclusive event, with attendance restricted to invited guests from the worlds of business, politics, and culture. Press representatives are not permitted, maintaining the event’s aura of exclusivity. However, in a progressive step taken in 2015, women are now welcomed as guests, opening up the traditional gathering to a broader audience.
Networking and Renown
Beyond its culinary and charitable aspects, the Schaffermahlzeit serves as a platform for networking and relationship building among the elite of Bremen and beyond. The presence of high-profile guests from various sectors adds to the event’s prestige.
The Ehrengast (Guest of Honor)
The Ehrengast (guest of honor) for the 2025 Schaffermahlzeit is Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia. His attendance underscores the long-standing significance of shipping in his state.
"With the Rhine as Europe’s most important waterway and the Port of Duisburg as the world’s largest inland port, North Rhine-Westphalia is a major logistics hub," Wüst stated. "For the first time, a Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia will be present as the Ehrengast at the traditional Schaffermahlzeit – a truly special honor that fills me with joy."
Preservation of Tradition and Cultural Heritage
The Schaffermahlzeit embodies the rich maritime and cultural heritage of Bremen. It is a testament to the city’s enduring connection to the sea and its commitment to supporting those who work upon it. The event’s meticulous organization, exquisite cuisine, and exclusive guest list contribute to its enduring appeal as a culinary and social tradition.
