TGL Golf Season Heats Up: McIlroy and Woods Chase Playoff Berth
The inaugural season of TGL golf reaches its penultimate week, presenting a crucial moment for co-founders Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. Despite their involvement in establishing the league, their respective teams currently find themselves outside the playoff picture.
McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf Faces Tough Test
McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf team, which also features Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, and Adam Scott, has the unfortunate distinction of being the only TGL squad yet to secure a victory this season. Their Monday doubleheader begins with a clash against Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, and the Atlanta Drive Golf Club.
Los Angeles Golf Club Welcomes Tony Finau
In an intriguing twist, Tony Finau has signed a one-match deal to join Collin Morikawa and the Los Angeles Golf Club for their Monday encounter against New York Golf Club. Should Los Angeles Golf Club prevail, it would significantly bolster their playoff chances.
Woods Withdraws from TGL Play
Tiger Woods is scheduled to sit out his team’s match with Jupiter Links GC on Tuesday, according to Golf Week. The decision comes in the wake of Woods’ emotional return to golf last week, where he openly discussed the challenges he faced following the loss of his mother.
The Bay Golf Club Seizes First Place
The Bay Golf Club has surged to the top of the SoFi Cup standings with two victories in the previous week, overtaking Los Angeles Golf Club. The team, led by Ludvig Aberg, Shane Lowry, Wyndham Clark, and Min Woo Lee, faces Jupiter Links GC on Tuesday and has one more regular season match remaining.
Playoff Format and Standings
Only the top four teams in the standings will qualify for the TGL playoffs. As of February 24th, the standings stand as follows:
- The Bay Golf Club (2 wins, 1 overtime loss)
- Los Angeles Golf Club (2 wins, 1 loss)
- Atlanta Drive Golf Club (2 wins, 1 loss)
- Cleeks GC (2 wins, 1 loss)
With two matches remaining, McIlroy and Woods must guide their teams to victory if they wish to secure a postseason berth.
TGL Format and Rules
TGL pits two teams of three players against each other in a unique blend of simulator and traditional golf. Players tee off from a mat into a massive screen, simulating fairways, rough, and sand surfaces.
After reaching a designated point, players transition to the "Green Zone," a spacious green that allows for various pin placements and hole configurations. A shot clock of 40 seconds adds an element of pressure, with violations resulting in a one-stroke penalty.
Each team plays nine holes of 3-on-3, alternate shot golf, followed by six head-to-head match play holes. Each hole in match play is worth one point, with ties resulting in an overtime, closest-to-the-pin competition.
Teams earn two points for a win, one point for an overtime loss, and zero points for a loss. The top four teams advance to the TGL semifinals.
