Fluctuations in Sexually Transmitted Infections in North Rhine-Westphalia
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a significant concern in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The number of reported cases of STIs has varied in recent years, prompting health authorities to emphasize preventive measures.
Syphilis Cases Decline, but Remain Elevated
According to data from the State Center for Health (LZG), the number of syphilis diagnoses in NRW decreased from 1,977 in 2023 to 1,715 in 2024. Despite this decline, the incidence of syphilis remains significantly higher than it was between 2010 and 2015.
The highest number of syphilis diagnoses in the past 15 years occurred in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 2,000 cases reported. In contrast, 2010 saw only around 1,100 diagnoses.
HIV Diagnoses Fluctuate
The trend in HIV diagnoses in NRW has been more stable. The number of reported cases has fluctuated between a low of 503 during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 and a high of 794 in 2014 and 2015. In 2024, 540 HIV cases were recorded.
Male Dominance in STI Cases
Both syphilis and HIV occur more frequently in men than in women. In 2024, 394 of the HIV diagnoses were in men, while 146 were in women. For syphilis, over 92% of those diagnosed were male.
Reporting of Other STIs
The mandatory reporting of other STIs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, was only introduced in NRW in 2022, so data for these infections are not yet available.
Prevention and Treatment
To combat STIs, the NRW government supports health authorities by providing financial assistance for free testing for uninsured individuals.
The LZG strongly recommends preventive measures, such as condom use and vaccination, as the most effective way to avoid both acute and chronic health problems associated with STIs.
In the event of suspected infection, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention or visit a counseling center. For individuals at high risk of HIV infection, preventive medications are available.
Conclusion
The fluctuating incidence of STIs in NRW highlights the ongoing need for preventive measures to safeguard public health. By promoting condom use, vaccination, timely diagnosis, and treatment, the LZG aims to reduce the prevalence and impact of these infections across the state.
