Outdoor Gastronomy in NRW Set to Blossom with Mild Spring Temperatures

As temperatures soar to a promising 18 degrees Celsius on Friday and 16 degrees Celsius on Saturday in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the outdoor dining season is expected to kick off in full swing at eateries across the state.

"Restaurateurs are taking advantage of the first truly warm weekend," predicted Thorsten Hellwig, spokesperson for the Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga). The German Weather Service (DWD) has forecast "unseasonably mild weather" and double-digit temperatures.

Gone are the days of "outdoor dining only for coffee" or postponing outdoor operations until after Easter, said Hellwig. Restaurateurs closely monitor the weather and react swiftly to any warming trends. Outdoor dining, he emphasized, has become "one of the megatrends of the past 30 years" and an essential component of the industry’s offerings.

In many cases, permits for outdoor dining are already in place year-round. After all, municipalities have a vested interest in vibrant city centers, Hellwig argued. This sentiment was echoed by Helmut Dedy, managing director of the NRW Municipal Association: "For our city centers to thrive, we need a balanced mix of residential, commercial, economic, educational, and cultural activities. Gastronomy is an integral part of that mix, and in warmer months, outdoor dining enhances its appeal."

According to the most recent figures from the NRW State Statistical Office (IT.NRW), the state is home to over 42,000 hospitality establishments, including restaurants, pubs, bars, and cafes. The exact number of businesses offering outdoor dining areas is not tracked, but the industry is a significant employer in NRW. In 2023, over 146,000 people were employed in social security-liable positions, supplemented by more than 113,000 mini-jobbers.

The resurgence of outdoor dining is a welcome development for both diners and restaurateurs alike. For customers, it offers a chance to enjoy their meals al fresco, soaking up the warm spring sunshine. For businesses, it presents an opportunity to increase revenue and cater to the growing demand for outdoor dining experiences.

While the weather may fluctuate, the enthusiasm for outdoor gastronomy is expected to remain high throughout the spring and summer months. As temperatures continue to rise, NRW’s cities and towns will transform into vibrant outdoor dining destinations, offering a delightful blend of culinary delights and scenic surroundings.

Benefits of Outdoor Dining for Restaurants and Customers

  • Increased revenue: Outdoor dining areas can accommodate more customers, potentially boosting revenue for restaurants.
  • Enhanced customer experience: Al fresco dining provides a unique and enjoyable atmosphere that enhances the overall dining experience.
  • Year-round dining: With proper planning and infrastructure, outdoor dining can be extended beyond the warmer months, allowing restaurants to cater to customers year-round.

Tips for Maximizing Outdoor Dining Success

  • Plan ahead: Obtain necessary permits, secure outdoor furniture and equipment, and hire additional staff as needed.
  • Create a comfortable and inviting ambiance: Use stylish furniture, provide shade from the sun, and ensure proper lighting for evening dining.
  • Offer a tailored menu: Consider adapting the menu to include dishes that are well-suited for outdoor dining, such as grilled items and refreshing salads.
  • Promote your outdoor dining: Advertise the availability of outdoor dining through social media, online listings, and signage at the restaurant entrance.
  • Monitor the weather: Stay informed about weather forecasts and have a contingency plan in place for inclement weather.
  • Provide excellent customer service: Ensure that staff is attentive and responsive, creating a positive and memorable dining experience for customers.
