At the shrill of the signal, Sophie Krafzik knows it’s time to depart. "30 more seconds," the 25-year-old utters, sealing the door to her glass-encased cockpit.
With meticulous precision, she scrutinizes the dashboard, adjusts her sunglasses, and presses the button labeled "Close Passenger Doors." It’s exam season, and Krafzik should be studying. However, at the stroke of 12:14 PM, she guides the 45-meter yellow Line 3 tram from its berth at Dresden’s "Wilder Mann" station.
Her maiden voyage, she recalls, was an experience like no other. "Especially when you’re used to cars, you realize how heavy and unwieldy this vehicle is."
Embarking on a New Journey
Krafzik’s journey to becoming a tram operator began with an apprenticeship at Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB), the city’s public transportation provider. After completing her training, she obtained her driver’s license and embarked on her new role.
"The driving itself is the least of my worries," she explains. "It’s the passengers and their safety that are paramount."

Each day, Krafzik navigates the bustling streets of Dresden, transporting passengers to their destinations. The tram traverses narrow cobblestone paths, glides along tree-lined boulevards, and weaves through the city’s historic center.
"The people are what make this job so special," she says. "Sometimes I feel like a social worker, listening to their stories and offering a helping hand if needed."

"You have to stay calm and assertive," she explains. "It’s about maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for everyone."
