Ski and Sledding in the Harz Mountains Despite Limited Snow

Skiing and Sledding in the Harz: Limited Options Despite Thin Snowfall

Braunlage

Despite the lack of significant snowfall, skiing is still possible at the Wurmberg in Braunlage. "All main slopes are open," said operations manager Fabian Brockschmidt. Light snowfall in recent days has provided a base for skiing.

Night skiing will be available on Friday evening, while the weekend will feature a competition for young skiers and snowboarders organized by local clubs. Snow cannons are operating day and night to augment the natural snow cover. Skiing has been possible at the Wurmberg throughout the past week.

Sankt Andreasberg

The Sonnenberg ski area in Sankt Andreasberg operates without snow cannons. However, skiing will still be available on at least one lift this weekend, according to operator Oliver Schmidt. The decision on whether to open additional lifts will be made at short notice. Snowfall continued in the area on Friday morning. Updates on the ski area’s operation will be posted on its Instagram page.

Sledding

Sledding is also possible at the Wurmberg, as well as in Torfhaus, where the toboggan lift is open, according to the operators’ website. Sledding is also available on the Bocksberg in Hahnenklee near Goslar, where snow depth is reported to be around five centimeters.

Bodetal

In Saxony-Anhalt, sledding is possible in the Bodetal area around Thale and Friedrichsbrunn, according to the Tourist Information. Winter hiking trails are also open, and a new hiking guide for the popular stamping points around Friedrichsbrunn is available. Hikers can collect stamps for a stamp booklet at various points along the Harzer hiking trails.

Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiers, however, will have to sit this weekend out. No cross-country trails are currently open, according to the Harzer Tourismusverwaltung. The snow cover is not thick enough to allow for the preparation of trails.

Weather Forecast

The German Weather Service predicts temperatures in Lower Saxony between around zero and minus ten degrees Celsius in the coming days. Light snowfall is expected in some areas.
