South Carolina Claims Top Seed in SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament After Coin Toss

A coin flip has determined the top seed for the upcoming Southeastern Conference (SEC) Women’s Basketball Tournament, awarding the coveted position to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The decision came down to chance after both the Texas Longhorns and the Gamecocks concluded the regular season with identical 15-1 records in SEC play, sharing the title of co-champions. Texas finished with an overall record of 29-2, while South Carolina concluded with a 27-3 record.

The regular-season series between the two powerhouse programs was split, with each team securing a victory on their home court. This deadlock left no clear-cut method for determining the No. 1 seed, forcing the SEC to resort to a coin toss to break the tie.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey officiated the coin flip, which landed in favor of the Gamecocks. The South Carolina emblem facing upwards signified the Gamecocks earning the No. 1 seed for the fourth consecutive year, a testament to their consistent dominance within the conference.

"Much respect to our conference," South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley expressed following her team’s 78-66 victory over Kentucky on Sunday. "The Southeastern Conference is the best conference in the country. To win another regular-season conference championship means a great deal, because these aren’t going to come by very easily."

Staley’s comments highlight the challenging nature of competing in the SEC, which has established itself as a premier conference in women’s college basketball. The league’s depth and competitiveness have made it incredibly difficult for any team to consistently achieve dominance.

South Carolina’s success extends beyond regular-season championships. The Gamecocks have also dominated the SEC Tournament in recent years, winning the title four times in the last five years. This consistent success has solidified their position as a perennial contender for the national championship.

The SEC’s dominance is not limited to conference play. The conference has also experienced unprecedented success in the NCAA Tournament, with SEC teams winning the national championship in each of the past three years. South Carolina won the title in 2022 and 2024, while LSU captured the crown in 2023. This three-year reign of SEC dominance underscores the conference’s strength and depth.

Looking ahead to the 2024 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament, all eyes will be on South Carolina as they seek to defend their top seed and add another tournament title to their impressive resume. The tournament is scheduled to be held from March 5-9 at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.

The tournament will serve as a crucial tune-up for teams hoping to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Selection Sunday, where the NCAA Tournament bracket is revealed, will follow on March 16, with March Madness officially tipping off on March 21.

The SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be widely broadcast on SEC Network, ESPN, and ESPN2. The first and second rounds will be exclusively available on SEC Network, providing extensive coverage of the early stages of the tournament.

The quarterfinal matchups will be split between ESPN and SEC Network. The first two quarterfinal games will be broadcast on ESPN, while the final two will be shown on SEC Network. This allows fans to catch all the crucial action as teams battle for a spot in the semifinals.

The semifinal games will move to ESPN2, offering a prime-time platform for these high-stakes contests. The championship game will then return to ESPN, ensuring maximum viewership for the tournament’s climax.
