Schwerin Upgrades Fire HQ with €46.6M Investment

Schwerin to Invest €46.6 Million in New Fire Station Headquarters

Expansion and Renovation Project to Enhance Firefighting Capabilities

Schwerin, the capital city of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is set to receive a state-of-the-art firefighting headquarters, thanks to a significant investment of €46.6 million. The project, confirmed by the city authorities in response to a dpa inquiry, aims to upgrade and expand the existing facility located on Graf-Yorck-Straße in the Großer Dreesch district.

Construction Timeline and Staffing Expansion

Scheduled for completion in two phases, the project includes the extension of the existing building by 2029 and the renovation of existing structures by 2030. In addition to the 41 existing staff positions, the new headquarters will create ten additional posts.

Modernization of Integrated Control Center and Facilities

The project has been driven by the need to modernize the premises of the Integrated Control Center for West Mecklenburg. Originally designed for a much smaller area, the center’s infrastructure and technology have not kept pace with the expansion of its responsibilities and personnel.

Nanne Schumann, Deputy Head of the Fire and Rescue Service in Schwerin, emphasized the urgency for a new building to accommodate more emergency call centers. She also highlighted the need to upgrade the workshops, particularly in terms of "black and white" separation—the segregation of contaminated and clean materials.

Approval and Planning

The need for the new fire station headquarters was outlined in the demand plan for the Fire and Rescue Service, which was approved by the city council in November 2022. The plan highlights the growing demands on firefighting and rescue operations, necessitating a more modern and efficient facility.

Benefits of the New Headquarters

The new fire station headquarters will provide Schwerin with several key benefits:

  • Enhanced firefighting capabilities and reduced response times
  • Improved working conditions for firefighters
  • Modern technology and infrastructure
  • Additional personnel to strengthen emergency response
  • Enhanced training facilities for firefighters and other emergency personnel

The project is expected to significantly improve the safety and well-being of Schwerin’s residents and visitors by providing a state-of-the-art facility for fire prevention, protection, and rescue operations.
