Reconstruction of Schönhagen Dike Nears Completion

Schönhagen, Germany – Approximately 18 months after the devastating Baltic Sea storm surge in October 2023, the reconstruction of the Schönhagen dike is nearing its final stages. The project is expected to be completed by Easter, according to Philipp Zülsdorff, the lead engineer.

The storm surge caused significant damage to the existing dike, forcing around 100 residents to evacuate their homes.

Current Progress and Materials

Currently, two-thirds of the new dike has been constructed. The project involves the installation of approximately 20,000 tons of stone along a 700-meter stretch. The total cost of the reconstruction is being covered by the state government and amounts to around three million euros.

Despite its imposing size, the new dike will be designed to minimize its visual impact on the landscape. "Our aim is to preserve the beach as the dominant feature," explained Zülsdorff.
