Saxon Police Drone Fleet Expands Significantly

Introduction

The Saxon Police have witnessed a substantial increase in their drone fleet, nearly doubling in size over the past year. The fleet now comprises 44 unmanned aerial systems (UASs), with 21 of them acquired in 2024 alone.

Procurement and Capabilities

This large-scale acquisition marks a significant milestone since the first police drone took flight in Saxony in 2009. As per the response from Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) to an inquiry from the Left Party in the state parliament, 14 of the newly procured drones are intended for drone defense purposes.

Increased Deployment and Applications

In the preceding year, Saxon police drones were deployed over 240 times, amassing more than 400 flight hours – a notable increase compared to 2023. Currently, 74 officers are authorized to operate these aerial units.

Football matches have emerged as the primary use case for police drones, with 28 surveillance flights conducted in this context. According to Jule Nagel, a Left Party member of parliament, Leipzig football matches have been the subject of extensive monitoring, with 21 specific incidents recorded. The rationale for this focus remains unexplained in the provided data.

Beyond sports surveillance, police drones have also been employed in various other roles, including:

  • Covert surveillance
  • Traffic monitoring and accident documentation
  • Investigation of fire scenes
  • Assistance in search and rescue operations
  • Support for raids and arrests

Public Scrutiny and Future Developments

The rapid expansion of the police drone fleet has garnered public attention and raised questions regarding the balance between security and privacy. Rico Gebhardt, a Left Party representative, emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the use of these surveillance technologies.

As the Saxon Police continue to integrate drones into their operations, it is crucial to establish clear legal frameworks and ethical guidelines to ensure responsible and proportionate deployment. The ongoing public discourse and legislative initiatives will shape the future of drone policing in Saxony and beyond.
