Kremlin Raises Possibility of New Prisoner Swap with US

Moscow, Russia – Following the recent release of two Americans imprisoned in Russia, the Kremlin has indicated that another prisoner exchange between the US and Russia could be in the works.

10 Americans Held in Russia

According to Reuters, approximately 10 Americans remain detained in Russia. Among these individuals are:

  • Kalob Byers, a 28-year-old arrested for drug smuggling earlier this month, who was freed ahead of US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia.
  • Marc Fogel, detained four years ago on drug charges, was released last week in exchange for Russian prisoner Alexander Vinnik, who was held by the US for cryptocurrency fraud.

Diplomatic Efforts in Riyadh

US and Russian officials met in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday to discuss a potential peace agreement for Ukraine and the possibility of a summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian officials were not present at the meeting.

Possible Prisoner Exchange on the Agenda

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the idea of a new prisoner exchange is on the agenda. He noted that the talks in Saudi Arabia contributed to a general rapprochement between the two countries.

Trump’s Involvement

Upon Fogel’s return to the US, he met with President Trump at the White House. Fogel hailed Trump as a hero for securing his release.

Department of State’s Confirmation

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce confirmed that the US team in Riyadh agreed to lay the groundwork for cooperation with Russia on various issues beyond Ukraine.

Possible Meeting Between Trump and Putin

Despite the absence of Ukrainian officials at the Riyadh talks, US and Russian officials expressed hope that the meeting could pave the way for a summit between Trump and Putin.

Background on Prisoner Swaps

This potential new prisoner exchange comes on the heels of the release of Trevor Reed and Brittney Griner, two Americans who were detained in Russia on separate charges. Their release was the result of a prisoner swap involving Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Hopes for Cooperation and Stability

The possibility of a new prisoner swap and the discussions in Riyadh indicate a potential thaw in US-Russia relations. Both countries appear to be exploring avenues of cooperation and pursuing a path towards greater stability and diplomatic engagement.
