Rublev Reaches Doha Semis After Marathon Victory Over De Minaur

World No. 10 Andrey Rublev battled through a marathon match against Alex De Minaur to reach the semifinals of the ATP 500 Doha event on Thursday. The Russian overcame the Australian, ranked eighth in the world, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (10/8) in a pulsating encounter that lasted nearly 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Rublev’s victory sets up a clash with compatriot Daniil Medvedev, the sixth-ranked player, or Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian has already claimed two titles in 2023, at the Adelaide and Montpellier ATP 250 events.

The match between Rublev and De Minaur swung back and forth, with both players displaying impressive skills and determination. Rublev took the first set comfortably, but De Minaur fought back to win the second. The decisive third set went down to the wire.

At 5-2, 40/30 on De Minaur’s serve, Rublev had a first chance to close out the match. However, a stunning passing shot from the Australian kept him in contention and set the stage for a thrilling finish. De Minaur saved an incredible seven match points before finally succumbing to Rublev’s relentless pressure.

Rublev, who was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open by Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca, has reached his second semifinal of the season in Doha. He also reached the last four at the Montpellier ATP 250 event earlier this month. His victory over De Minaur leveled their head-to-head record to 4-4.

Speaking after the match, Rublev praised De Minaur’s fighting spirit and expressed his delight at reaching the Doha semifinals.

"Alex played really well and made me work hard for every point," said Rublev. "I’m happy to have come through in the end and reach the semifinals. It’s a tough tournament, but I’m confident that I can go all the way."

Rublev’s victory is a testament to his resilience and ability to perform under pressure. He will now face a stern test against Medvedev or Auger-Aliassime, but he will be buoyed by his recent form and the support of the Doha crowd.
