Devastating Fire Cripples Rio Carnival Costume Production
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – A catastrophic fire has devastated a costume factory in Rio de Janeiro, dealing a severe blow to the city’s world-renowned Carnival celebrations just weeks away.
The blaze erupted at a facility housing the entire costume production of three prominent samba schools: Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Unidos da Tijuca, and Mocidade.
"All indications point to the total loss of materials," lamented Hugo Júnior, president of the Carnival league, to the news portal "G1."
Amidst the tragedy, at least 21 individuals sustained injuries, including 10 with serious burns from smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but authorities have confirmed that the factory lacked a valid operating license from the fire department.
Support for Affected Schools
In the aftermath of the disaster, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes pledged support for the affected schools, assuring them that they would be spared relegation this year. Traditionally, a jury evaluates the performances of samba schools at the Sambadrome, determining their placement and potential relegation or promotion.
"We are committed to finding solutions that will enable them to continue their work and celebrate Carnival with the grandeur that the people deserve," declared the Carnival league.

Despite the setback, the legendary Carnival parades will commence as scheduled on February 28th, beginning with the Access Series schools, followed by the top-tier Special Group.
"The spirit of Carnival will not be extinguished by this unfortunate event," said Mayor Paes. "We will overcome this challenge together and ensure that the world experiences the magic and joy of Rio Carnival."
