A Life of Altitude: Amyot Tripard, a Gendarme in the Service of the Mountains

Amidst the pristine peaks and azure skies of the Haute-Savoie region, the mountains hold a profound allure for those who dare to conquer their formidable heights. Amyot Tripard is one such individual, a Gendarme dedicated to the perilous but rewarding task of mountain rescue.

A Childhood Shaped by the Summits

Born to a mountain guide, Amyot Tripard’s childhood was intertwined with the slopes of the Alps. Despite the family connection, he initially pursued a different path, seeking academic fulfillment in engineering. However, the pull of the mountains proved irresistible, and he ultimately found his calling in mountain rescue.

Joining the Famed PGHM

In 2006, Amyot Tripard’s dream became a reality as he successfully entered the Gendarmerie. His entry into the elite Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne (PGHM) of Chamonix the following year marked a significant milestone in his career. It was here that he honed his skills, responding to countless emergencies in the treacherous alpine terrain.

A Pivotal Mission on Mont Blanc

On July 30, 2023, Amyot Tripard and his comrade were dispatched to Mont Blanc, the iconic peak that draws thousands of climbers each year. Reports of a climber falling on the normal route had reached the drop zone, setting the heart-pounding mission in motion.

Assessing the Perilous Landscape

Upon reaching the glacier, Amyot Tripard’s keen observation skills were put to the test. Recognizing the risks posed by the unstable snow, crevasses, and potential avalanches, he prioritized the safety of both himself and the victim.

The Unpredictable Avalanche

As they searched for the climber, a sudden movement caught their attention. However, their efforts to approach were abruptly interrupted by a massive avalanche. Amyot Tripard’s lightning-fast reflexes allowed him to secure himself and his colleague as the snow engulfed them.

A Miraculous Rescue Amidst Chaos

As the snow settled, leaving them trapped, Amyot Tripard kept his composure. When he finally managed to break free, he discovered their victim close by. With swift coordination, they rescued the injured man and transported him to safety.

The Medal of Bravery

A year and a half later, the memory of that harrowing day still lingers in Amyot Tripard’s mind. Despite the risks and uncertainties that come with his profession, he remains unwavering in his commitment to saving lives in the mountains.

The medal of bravery that he will receive on Monday is a testament to his courage and the dedication of all mountain rescuers who risk their own well-being to protect others in the face of nature’s unpredictable forces.
