Public Transport Strikes Disrupt NRW as Verdi Protests Continue

Warnstrikes Continue in North Rhine-Westphalia’s Public Transport

Bonn and Rhein-Sieg-Kreis Affected

The public transport sector in Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district has been brought to a standstill since 3:00 AM as employees have joined the warning strikes organized by the Verdi union in North Rhine-Westphalia. Approximately 700 to 800 workers are participating in the strike, while private bus operators are not involved.

Bielefeld and Münsterland Affected

The Bielefeld-based public transport company moBiel GmbH and Regionalverkehr Münsterland GmbH are also affected by the warning strikes, which commenced at 4:00 AM. Trains and buses operated by these companies are currently not running. However, private contractors are expected to maintain regular services, according to moBiel GmbH.

In the case of Regionalverkehr Münsterland GmbH, the strikes are impacting Lüdinghausen, Beckum, and Ibbenbüren. Employees in the districts of Coesfeld, Steinfurt, and Warendorf have suspended their work for the entire day. Regionalverkehr Münsterland GmbH had initially anticipated that the strike in the Borken district would only last for a few hours in the morning.

Verdi’s Position

The Verdi union remains determined to hold its planned assemblies despite the alleged attack on a strikers’ gathering in Munich. However, the union will modify the format of these events in close consultation with local security authorities. Demonstrations will either be held silently or reorganized as short commemorative rallies with only a brief address. "Today is not the day to bring out the whistles," a Verdi spokesperson stated.

In Bonn, Verdi has also planned temporary work stoppages at the city administration, offices of federal ministries, the University’s student services organization, and various other institutions. The union aims to increase pressure on employers at both the federal and municipal levels in the ongoing wage negotiations.

The second round of negotiations is scheduled for February 17 and 18 in Potsdam. Verdi is demanding an 8% salary increase, or a minimum of €350 per month, alongside three additional paid leave days.

Additional Details and Considerations

  • The strikes are part of a broader effort by public sector employees to secure improved working conditions and wages in ongoing collective bargaining negotiations.

  • The alleged attack on a strikers’ gathering in Munich has raised concerns about the safety of participants in labor actions. Verdi is emphasizing the importance of peaceful demonstrations and working closely with security authorities to ensure the well-being of its members.

  • The impact of the strikes on commuters and public transportation users is expected to be significant, particularly during rush hour. Travelers are advised to make alternative arrangements or check with their local public transport providers for updates.

  • Private bus operators are expected to maintain regular services in the affected areas to minimize disruption. However, passengers may experience delays or changes to their usual routes.

  • The outcome of the negotiations between Verdi and employers will determine the future of public sector wages and benefits in Germany. Both parties have expressed a willingness to compromise, but the final agreement will depend on finding a balance between the needs of employees and the financial constraints of employers.
