Extensive Service Disruptions as Warning Strikes Cripple Public Transport in Northern Germany

Massive Bus and Train Cancellations in Niedersachsen and Bremen

Warning strikes by employees in the public sector have led to widespread bus and rail disruptions in the German states of Niedersachsen and Bremen. Bus and tram services have been largely suspended in major cities, leaving commuters stranded and causing significant inconvenience.

Nationwide Protest Action

The strikes are part of a coordinated wave of warning strikes across six German states. In Niedersachsen and Bremen, the following cities are affected:

  • Hannover
  • Bremen
  • Braunschweig
  • Osnabrück
  • Göttingen
  • Wolfsburg
  • Peine
  • Lüchow-Dannenberg

Services at a Standstill

In Bremen, the public transport company, Bremer Straßenbahn-AG, has announced the cancellation of all bus and tram services, as have the Üstra in Hannover and the Braunschweiger Verkehrs-GmbH in Braunschweig. In Göttingen and Wolfsburg, all bus lines have been suspended. In Osnabrück, only a limited number of city buses are operating. Lüchow-Dannenberg has also reported numerous canceled bus services.

Staff Gatherings and Demonstrations

According to a spokesperson for the Verdi union, rallies and gatherings of employees are planned at numerous depots. In Hannover, approximately 200 people gathered at the depot early in the morning.

Background: Ongoing Labor Dispute

The warning strikes stem from an ongoing labor dispute in the public sector. The second round of wage negotiations for over 2.5 million employees of the federal government and municipalities ended on Tuesday without any progress. The Verdi union is demanding an 8% wage increase and more flexible working hours, while employers have yet to make an offer. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for March 14-16.

Impact on Commuters and Businesses

The strikes have a major impact on commuters, who rely on public transport to get to work and school. Businesses are also affected, as employees are unable to reach their workplaces. The disruptions are expected to continue until a resolution is reached in the labor negotiations.

Call for Resolution and Dialogue

Public transport users and businesses are urging the parties involved in the dispute to find a quick resolution. They emphasize the importance of maintaining essential public services and preventing further inconvenience to the public.
