High Workload Raises Mental Health Risks for Hamburg Teachers: Study

Teaching is a demanding profession that can take a toll on mental health. A recent study conducted by the Education and Science Workers’ Union (GEW) Hamburg has shed light on the alarming prevalence of mental health issues among Hamburg teachers, highlighting the urgent need for intervention and support.

Study Findings

The study’s findings reveal a concerning picture of the mental well-being of Hamburg teachers, with high levels of burnout and depression risks. Key findings include:

  • Low Job Satisfaction: Only 24% of surveyed teachers reported high job satisfaction, a significantly lower rate compared to other academic professions.
  • Burnout Risk: Three-quarters of respondents exhibited at least a moderate risk of burnout, while 18% faced a high risk.
  • Depression Risk: 22% of teachers were found to have a risk of depression.

Contributing Factors

The study identified several factors contributing to the high prevalence of mental health issues among Hamburg teachers, including:

  • Excessive Workload: Teachers are compelled to take on numerous additional tasks that encroach upon their time, such as resolving technical issues, creating teaching materials, and providing social pedagogical support.
  • Digitalization: While digitalization has the potential to enhance teaching, it has also introduced new challenges and increased workload, as teachers must navigate technical issues and adapt to new digital tools.
  • Insufficient Support: Teachers lack adequate support personnel, leading to an overload of responsibilities and a diminished capacity to provide effective instruction.

Call for Action

In light of these findings, the GEW Hamburg has urged the School Authority to implement concrete measures to address the mental health crisis among teachers. Recommendations include:

  • Workload Assessment: Implementing accurate workload tracking to identify and mitigate excessive demands.
  • Staffing Increase: Hiring additional staff to assist teachers with technical, administrative, and social pedagogical tasks, freeing up time for instruction.
  • Digitalization Support: Providing training and resources to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage digital tools effectively.

Study Methodology

The study was conducted in the first half of 2024 and involved 925 teachers from 75% of Hamburg’s grammar schools and comprehensive schools. Researchers from the Georg-August University of Göttingen led the study, highlighting the need for further research on the mental health of teachers and the development of evidence-based interventions to support their well-being.
