Chicago Native Elected Pope Leo XIV, Archdiocese Celebrates Historic Moment

The Archdiocese of Chicago is celebrating a momentous occasion as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago native, has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, the first pope in history to hail from the United States. The announcement of his election reverberated across the globe on Thursday, marking a historic turning point for the Catholic Church.

The 69-year-old pontiff, a member of the Augustinians, a prominent religious order within the Church, brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to the papacy. Born and raised in Chicago, he pursued his higher education at Villanova University before being ordained as a priest in 1982. His dedication and service to the Church led to his appointment as a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.

Prior to his election as pope, Leo XIV served as the prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, positions that provided him with extensive knowledge of the global Church and its challenges.

Archdiocese Leaders Share Insights into Pope Leo XIV’s Character

In a press conference held on Thursday, leaders of the Archdiocese of Chicago expressed their excitement and shared insights into the kind of leader they believe Pope Leo XIV will be.

Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Lawrence Sullivan drew parallels between Pope Leo XIV and Pope Francis, highlighting their shared commitment to serving the marginalized and forgotten. He expressed his strong conviction that Pope Leo XIV will continue to give voice to the voiceless and advocate for the vulnerable.

Sullivan emphasized the diverse perspectives that Pope Leo XIV brings to the papacy, shaped by his upbringing in Chicago, his education in the United States, and his extensive service in Peru. He noted that Leo XIV’s experience in leadership roles at the Vatican has equipped him with a deep understanding of the needs of the poor and those in need, as well as a comprehensive understanding of the global Church.

A Leader for All People

Sullivan acknowledged that while Pope Leo XIV was born in the United States, his role as the leader of the Catholic Church transcends national boundaries. He stated that Leo XIV will lead as a child of God, considering the needs of all people, regardless of their nationality or background.

Father Gregory Sakowicz, rector of Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral, echoed the sentiment of pride in Pope Leo XIV’s Chicago roots. He acknowledged that one can never deny their origins and expressed his belief that Leo XIV will always hold a special place in his heart for Chicago and the United States.

A Cubs Fan in the Vatican?

Sakowicz jokingly raised a burning question about Pope Leo XIV’s allegiance to Chicago sports teams. He noted that Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, was born on the South Side of Chicago, traditionally White Sox territory. However, Sakowicz revealed that he had heard that Leo XIV is actually a Cubs fan. He concluded by saying, "Well, God bless him, and God bless all the fans."

Trump Congratulates Pope Leo XIV

Former President Donald Trump has also extended his congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election, calling it a great honor for the United States.

The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a historic moment for the Catholic Church. As the first pope to be born in the United States, he brings a unique perspective and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the Church in the 21st century. His commitment to serving the poor and marginalized, his extensive experience in leadership roles, and his deep faith make him well-equipped to lead the Church forward in these complex times.
