Pope Francis Continues Hospital Stay for Respiratory Infection

Rome, Italy – Pope Francis began his fourth day in hospital on Monday, as the Vatican reported that his treatment for a respiratory infection was ongoing and his condition remained stable.

The 88-year-old pontiff slept well overnight and had breakfast on Monday, said Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni. A further update on his condition would be provided later in the day, Bruni added.

Pope Francis, who has been struggling with bronchitis for over a week, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday. Doctors advised him complete rest, and he has been unable to deliver his usual Sunday prayer address to pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square or lead a special Mass for artists during the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year.

The Vatican on Sunday described his condition as "stable" and said he was continuing his treatment. It had previously stated that he would remain in hospital for as long as necessary.

During his hospital stay, the pope has continued to make phone calls, including to members of a Catholic parish in Gaza, Italian television network Mediaset reported on Monday. One parishioner said Pope Francis had called on Friday and Saturday and was "in good spirits" but seemed "a bit tired."

The Vatican has canceled the pope’s planned visit to Rome’s Cinecitta film studios on Monday.

"I thank you for the affection, prayer, and closeness with which you accompany me during these days," the pope wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

Background on Pope Francis’ Health

Pope Francis has a history of respiratory problems, including a bout of pneumonia in 2018. He also suffers from sciatica, a nerve condition that causes pain and discomfort in the lower back and legs.

In 2020, he underwent surgery to remove part of his colon due to a narrowing condition called diverticular stenosis. The surgery was successful, and he made a full recovery.

Concerns and Prayers

Catholics around the world have expressed concern for the pope’s health and offered prayers for his recovery. Churches and religious organizations have held Masses and prayer services in his honor.

Vatican officials have urged the public to respect the pope’s need for rest and recovery. They have also asked for privacy for the pontiff and his medical team.

Possible Impact on Papal Activities

The pope’s hospitalization has led to the cancellation or postponement of several scheduled events, including a trip to the southern Italian city of Bari and a meeting with the leaders of various Christian denominations.

It is unclear how long Pope Francis will remain in hospital or how his condition will affect his ability to carry out his duties as head of the Catholic Church. The Vatican has said that his recovery will be closely monitored and that any decisions regarding his future activities will be made in consultation with his doctors.

Messages of Support

Numerous world leaders and religious figures have sent messages of support and prayers for Pope Francis’ recovery.

  • President Joe Biden of the United States: "I offer my well wishes to Pope Francis as he continues his recovery from surgery. The prayers and thoughts of the American people are with him."

  • Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby: "Our prayers are with Pope Francis for a speedy and full recovery and with all who care for him, especially the doctors and nurses at Gemelli Hospital."

  • President Emmanuel Macron of France: "I wish him a speedy recovery in this test and I want to assure him of the affection and friendship of the French people."
