Construction of Police Dormitory in Oranienburg Progressing Smoothly
According to Brandenburg’s Minister of the Interior, Katrin Lange, the construction of a dormitory for approximately 400 police recruits in Oranienburg is proceeding according to schedule. The SPD politician stated during a meeting of the Interior Committee of the state parliament in Potsdam, "The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026. We may even finish slightly ahead of schedule."
Despite the frequent delays plaguing the construction industry, Lange expressed confidence in the project’s progress. She attributed the smooth construction to the project’s commencement roughly two years ago.
Lange emphasized the significance of the dormitory in enhancing the appeal of the police profession, particularly considering the scarcity of housing options in the Berlin metropolitan area. She stated, "Once we can offer dormitory accommodations starting next year […], it will be another factor in attracting more young people to the Brandenburg police force."
Feasibility of Firefighting School in Wünsdorf Under Review
Lange also provided an update on the plans to establish a second state fire academy in Wünsdorf. She informed the Interior Committee that assessments are still underway and a decision regarding the construction of a new building or the utilization of existing unoccupied spaces will be made by March at the latest.
"We are examining whether we could implement a more cost-effective and time-efficient solution by using the existing buildings in Wünsdorf," Lange stated. According to her, the estimated cost of constructing a new building is approximately €36 million.
Lange highlighted the need for thorough evaluations before making a final decision. She emphasized the importance of considering all aspects, including the preservation of historical structures and ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities.
Additional Funding for Police and Firefighting Training
The State Parliament of Brandenburg has approved additional funding for police and firefighting training. The parliament approved an increase of €12.8 million for the police and €4.5 million for the fire service, effective from 2024.
Lange welcomed the decision, stating that it would enable the police to hire more staff and strengthen the fire service. She emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the safety and security of the state.
Challenges and Solutions in Police and Firefighting
Lange acknowledged the challenges faced by the police, including the increasing number of digital crimes and the need for constant modernization. She emphasized the state’s ongoing efforts to provide police officers with the necessary training and equipment to effectively combat crime.
With regard to the fire service, Lange highlighted the risks posed by climate change, such as more frequent and severe natural disasters. She stressed the importance of equipping firefighters with the latest technology and providing them with adequate protective gear to respond effectively to emergencies.
Conclusion
Brandenburg’s Ministry of the Interior remains dedicated to improving the operational capabilities of the police and fire services. The construction of the police dormitory in Oranienburg, the establishment of a second state fire academy in Wünsdorf, and the additional funding for training are all part of the government’s efforts to enhance public safety and security in the state.
