Phosphor Recovery Takes Center Stage with Landmark Project in Schkopau, Germany

The chemical industry hub of Schkopau, Germany, is set to become the site of a groundbreaking project focused on phosphorus recovery. In the next two years, a lighthouse project will emerge, aiming to create the first industrial-scale facility for extracting phosphorus from sewage sludge.

Phosphorus: A Critical Raw Material

Phosphorus, a crucial element for life, plays a pivotal role as a primary ingredient in fertilizers. Its significance is further amplified by the European Union’s classification of phosphorus as a critical raw material, owing to its limited availability from only a handful of countries.

"This endeavor represents the future for Germany," stated Martin Braunersreuther, Managing Director of the newly established Phosphorgewinnung Schkopau GmbH (Phosphorus Recovery Schkopau Ltd.). "Germany lacks domestic phosphorus reserves, leaving us dependent on a select group of exporting nations."

According to the German Ministry of the Environment, a staggering 84 percent of the world’s phosphorus reserves are concentrated in just six countries: Morocco, China, Egypt, Algeria, South Africa, and Brazil.

Phosphor Recovery Solution

The Schkopau project is poised to revolutionize phosphorus recovery, harnessing innovative technology to extract the vital element from sewage sludge. "By 2027, we expect to commission the world’s first large-scale demonstration plant," said Christian Kabbe, Managing Director of Easymining, the Swedish company spearheading the project in collaboration with energy provider Gelsenwasser.

The ambitious goal is to process approximately 300,000 tons of sewage sludge annually, equivalent to roughly 50 percent of the sewage sludge ash generated in Germany. This transformative process has the potential to offset 25 to 50 percent of Germany’s current phosphorus imports.

EU Regulations and Germany’s Leadership

Armin Willingmann, Minister for Environment and Energy in Saxony-Anhalt, emphasized the importance of the project in light of upcoming European regulations mandating phosphorus recovery by 2029. "Germany is taking a proactive stance, being the first nation to swiftly implement these European directives," Willingmann noted.

The construction of the demonstration plant is receiving substantial support, with government funding amounting to approximately 27 million euros.

Long-Term Vision

Beyond the initial demonstration facility, plans are already underway for additional phosphorus recovery plants in Germany. Easymining’s Kabbe envisions a future where this sustainable solution is widely adopted.

"Phosphorus is essential for agriculture and, by extension, for feeding the world’s population," Kabbe emphasized. "Our technology offers a sustainable and economically viable way to secure this critical resource for generations to come."
