Improved Punctuality for Paris Metro and RER in 2024, with Exceptions
Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) has reported improvements in the punctuality of Paris Metro and RER services in 2024. However, certain lines continue to experience challenges, such as RER lines B, C, and D, as well as Metro line 8.
Despite the improvements, IDFM emphasizes the need to maintain the momentum and address the persistent issues on affected lines.
RER Lines
IDFM defines punctuality as the percentage of trains that operated as scheduled. Progress has been made on the RER B line, which achieved 88% punctuality due to increased train availability and a revised procedure for evacuating passengers experiencing medical emergencies.
However, some sections of the line still face difficulties, including Aulnay – CDG 2, Aulnay – Mitry-Claye, and the axis towards Saint-Rémy-les-Chevreuse.
RER lines C and D have also shown improvement, with punctuality increasing from 86% to 88% and 87% respectively.
To address the ongoing challenges, IDFM plans to launch a compensation platform in mid-March for regular users of affected axes on RER lines B and C, as well as for users of the T12 tramway, which has experienced difficulties since its launch.
RER line E has also encountered numerous operational incidents since the extension to Nanterre during peak hours in December 2024.
Metro Lines
Overall, the cumulative punctuality rate for Metro lines in 2024 reached 96.18%, a 3.45-point increase compared to 2023. Lines 3, 6, 7, and 13, which previously struggled with punctuality, have now surpassed 90%.
Only line 8, considered "structurally fragile," remains at 88% punctuality. However, efforts are ongoing to renovate the line’s trains.
IDFM highlights the positive impact of line extensions and new rolling stock on Metro punctuality. Line 14 has been extended to Orly, line 11 to Rosny-Bois-Perrier, and the new generation MF19 metro will be introduced on line 10 by the end of 2025.
IDFM Response
The President of IDFM, Valérie Pécresse, has commended the efforts of operators and emphasized the need to sustain the progress made.
"The situation continues to improve on the Metro, which has seen lines 14 and 11 extended to Orly and Rosny-Bois-Perrier with new rolling stock," Pécresse stated. "And which will see the arrival of the new generation MF19 metro on line 10 at the end of 2025."
IDFM remains committed to addressing the remaining challenges and ensuring reliable and efficient public transportation for the Île-de-France region.
