Microsoft Forcibly Installs New Outlook App on Windows 10 PCs
Updated February 12, 2025:
As of yesterday, Microsoft has silently forced all PCs running Windows 10 21H2 and Windows 10 22H2 to install the new Outlook app. This move, which was anticipated in our original story below, has now been implemented.
Original Story:
For months, Microsoft has been urging Windows users to switch to the new Outlook app, with the classic Outlook recently receiving an official "death date." Many users have been reluctant to make the switch, but Microsoft is now tightening the screws.
February 2025 Patch Tuesday: New Outlook App Forced Installation
With the February 2025 Patch Tuesday update, Microsoft has initiated a new phase in Outlook’s migration. According to BetaNews, Windows 10 users will be forced to install the new Outlook app on their PCs.
Microsoft’s official stance is that "New Outlook exists as an installed app on the device. It can be found in the Apps section of the Start Menu. It does not replace existing (classic) Outlook or change any configurations / user defaults. Both (classic) Outlook and New Outlook for Windows can run side by side."
However, as of update KB5051974, which is mandatory, the new Outlook app has been force-installed for Windows 10 users on versions 21H2 and 22H2.
Optional January 2025 Preview Update
Microsoft has made it clear that Windows 10 users do not have to wait until February to get the new Outlook. They can immediately install the new Outlook app by installing the January 2025 preview update.
No Option to Block Installation
Microsoft emphasizes that Windows 10 users cannot prevent the installation of the new Outlook app. If you prefer not to have the new Outlook appear on your devices, you can remove it after it’s installed as part of the update.
Uninstall After Installation
In other words, even if you cannot block the installation of the new Outlook app, you can always uninstall it afterwards. This is an annoying move by Microsoft, but at least users have the option to remove the app if they don’t want it.
