"I have the opportunity to help students succeed by learning how to create, establish and refine different programs," Murphy explains. "I am learning how to evaluate and assess what I have, and then how to better support students based on the data that comes to me, and so it all comes back full circle. I’ll be able to use my dissertation to help students." This commitment to using research and data to inform her practice underscores her dedication to evidence-based decision-making and continuous improvement.

"I am a lifetime learner," she declares. "I am a follower of the Lord, and the Lord drew me to Tech in the first place. So if He chooses, if He wants me to go somewhere and do something, then I’m absolutely going to do it. But I’m never going to be a ladder climber – I want to be a ladder builder. I want to help people around me and build ladders for other people to climb up on." This profound statement encapsulates her personal philosophy, emphasizing her commitment to service, mentorship, and creating pathways to success for others.

Her dedication to education has also served as an inspiration to her sons, who are both currently in college. She shares a lighthearted anecdote about her youngest son, who is pursuing pre-med studies, revealing a playful competition between them. "I joke with my youngest, who is in pre-med, that I would be the first Dr. Murphy," she says. "That’s our little joke back and forth – who’s going to get it (the doctor title) first."

Applicants must possess a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 from their last graduate degree or 60 hours of undergraduate work. "It came from the anticipation – the anticipatory anxiety, not the actual coursework. As a human, you’re more capable than you think. Most of the time, you’re going to love it and you’re going to want to push forward." She emphasizes that the fear of the unknown is often more daunting than the actual experience of pursuing graduate studies, and that most students find the coursework engaging and rewarding.
