Feldhamster Comeback: A Saxon Saga of Reintroduction

A sea of yellow blossoms, crisp spring air, and the promise of freedom for small creatures: North Saxony has launched its second year of reintroduction efforts for the critically endangered European hamster, also known as the field hamster or common hamster. The initial release of 15 individuals marks the beginning of a renewed push to bolster the local population and prevent the extinction of this iconic species within the region.

"This year, we aim to release up to 200 hamsters, building upon the success of our 2024 reintroduction efforts, where we released 71 animals," stated Jörg Junhold, the Director of the Leipzig Zoo, the central coordinating force behind the project. The initial signs are encouraging: over 200 burrows were documented within the protected reintroduction area last autumn, suggesting successful reproduction among the reintroduced population. This provides crucial evidence that the hamsters are adapting to their new environment and establishing themselves.

The Leipzig Zoo is collaborating with the "Cooperative Field Hamster Protection in the Free State of Saxony" working group, a consortium of experts and stakeholders dedicated to the hamster’s recovery. Their collective objective is to establish a stable and self-sustaining population of the threatened species within the remaining Saxon habitat where it is naturally found. This is not merely a conservation effort; it is a commitment to preserving a vital part of Saxony’s natural heritage.
