Lyon Coach and Captain Back Club President’s Criticism of PSG Dominance
Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca and captain Alexandre Lacazette have expressed their support for club president John Textor’s criticism of Paris Saint-Germain’s dominance in French football.
Ahead of Sunday’s crucial match between Lyon and PSG at the Groupama Stadium, Fonseca and Lacazette spoke out in favor of Textor’s stance.
"We support our president and we agree with what he says," Lacazette said at a press conference. "It’s good that he’s strong in what he thinks and in his beliefs and that he follows through (in his approach). It doesn’t matter if it’s against the PSG president or someone else, we don’t really care."
Fonseca echoed Lacazette’s sentiments.
"I support our president and his words. I can’t say much more. He understands what’s going on very well. He believes we need change, and I fully support John," Fonseca said.
Textor, an American businessman, has been vocal in his criticism of PSG’s financial power and the club’s impact on the Ligue 1 ecosystem. He has accused PSG of breaking Financial Fair Play rules and has called for a more equitable distribution of resources in French football.
Lyon, currently sixth in the Ligue 1 standings, will face a daunting task when they take on league leaders PSG on Sunday. However, Fonseca believes his team can challenge the French champions.
"We know it’s a difficult game, but we’re ready for it," Fonseca said. "We have a team that can compete against anyone, and we’re going to give everything we have to win."
Lacazette, who has been in impressive form for Lyon this season, is also confident in his team’s ability to upset PSG.
"We’re going to have to be at our best, but we believe in ourselves," Lacazette said. "We have a lot of quality in our team, and we’re going to go out there and try to win the game."
The match between Lyon and PSG is set to be a pivotal moment in the Ligue 1 title race. A win for Lyon would close the gap between the two teams to just five points, while a PSG victory would extend their lead at the top of the table.
The match will also be a test of Textor’s resolve. If Lyon can upset PSG, it would send a strong message that other clubs in Ligue 1 are not willing to simply accept PSG’s dominance.
