Remarkable Rescue: Police Officer and Firefighter Collaborate to Save Woman from Flames

In a display of exceptional teamwork and bravery, a Chandler Police Officer and an off-duty Peoria Firefighter collaborated to rescue a woman from her burning vehicle after a cement truck collided with her Nissan pickup, causing it to overturn and erupt in flames.
On the Scene: A Life-Threatening Emergency
The harrowing incident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. on the U.S. 60 westbound highway near Val Vista in Arizona. As Chandler Police Officer Brian Larison approached the scene, the severity of the situation became apparent.
"The thought of human life perishing by flames… I just, you know, I was like, ‘I cannot let this happen,’" Larison stated.
Initial Response: Breaking the Flames
Larison, a Marine veteran and a skilled motor officer, was the first to arrive at the scene. Swiftly assessing the situation, he utilized his baton to shatter the window of the burning vehicle, providing a potential escape route for the trapped woman.
Fateful Intervention: The Firefighter’s Arrival
As Larison worked to extricate the woman, he noticed an off-duty firefighter approaching the scene. It was Asa Paguia, also a Marine veteran and a firefighter with the Peoria Fire Department.
"Just right place, right time," Larison remarked.
Overcoming Obstacles: A Collaborative Effort
Paguia, who happened to have his firefighting gear with him due to an overtime shift the previous day, sprang into action. As the woman began to escape, the truck shifted, pinning her beneath its weight.
Undeterred, Paguia donned his protective gear and assisted Larison in pulling the woman from the wreckage. Working together, they transported her to a safe distance from the flames as fire and EMS crews arrived on the scene.
Post-Rescue: A Moment of Gratitude
The rescued woman, whose identity has not been released, was transported to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Her first call was to her husband, expressing her overwhelming gratitude.
"The way we operate is we risk a lot to save a lot," Paguia stated. "So I decided it was worth the risk to get that patient out of there."

The Chandler Police Department and the Peoria Fire Department have both lauded the heroic actions of Larison and Paguia. Their quick thinking, bravery, and collaboration saved a life that was hanging in the balance.
"These first responders went above and beyond the call of duty to save a life," said Chief Joe Bianchi of the Chandler Police Department. "Their selfless actions are a testament to their commitment to serving our community."
