Nick Pivetta Signs Four-Year, $55 Million Deal with San Diego Padres

Nick Pivetta Finds New Home with San Diego Padres

Four-Year, $55 Million Deal

Nick Pivetta, the former Boston Red Sox pitcher, has inked a four-year, $55 million contract with the San Diego Padres, pending a physical, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The contract includes several opt-outs and performance escalators.

Contract Details

The deal breaks down as follows:

  • $1 million signing bonus
  • $1 million in 2025
  • $19 million in 2026
  • $14 million in 2027
  • $18 million in 2028

Pivetta’s Impressive Performance

Pivetta, a right-handed pitcher, was one of the most sought-after free agents remaining on the market. Despite missing some time last season due to a right elbow flexor strain, he posted an impressive 6-12 record with a 4.14 ERA for the Red Sox.

In 145.2 innings pitched, Pivetta struck out 172 batters while allowing 128 hits, 70 runs (60 earned), and 36 walks. On May 30, he made history by striking out eight consecutive batters in a game against the Detroit Tigers, tying Roger Clemens’ franchise record.

Pivetta Joins a Contending Rotation

Pivetta will bolster the Padres’ starting rotation, which already includes Dylan Cease, Michael King, Yu Darvish, and Randy Vasquez. The Padres have high hopes for the 2023 season, especially after their strong finish in 2022.

Red Sox’s Failed Offer

The Red Sox had previously offered Pivetta a $21.05 million qualifying offer in the offseason, but he declined it to explore free agency. Pivetta’s decision paid off, as he secured a more lucrative deal with the Padres.

Padres’ Injury Concerns

While the Padres have a strong rotation on paper, there are some injury concerns. Joe Musgrove, one of their top starters, underwent Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire 2023 season. This creates an opportunity for Pivetta to step up and become a key contributor in the Padres’ rotation.

Pivetta’s Impact on the Padres

Pivetta’s addition gives the Padres a more balanced and formidable rotation. He has proven to be a reliable starter with strikeout potential and the ability to eat innings. His presence should help the Padres compete for a World Series title in the upcoming season.
