Microsoft Bolsters Surface Lineup with AI-Powered, Affordable Options
Microsoft is injecting a fresh wave of innovation into its Surface product family, introducing new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models that boast enhanced AI capabilities and a more accessible price point. Known for their commendable balance of power and portability, Surface devices are now poised to further leverage the power of on-device AI processing through dedicated Neural Processing Units (NPUs). The upcoming 2025 Surface Laptop and Surface Pro promise to bring Microsoft’s Copilot+ experience to a wider audience.
The Copilot+ designation signifies PCs equipped with potent NPUs, enabling them to execute advanced versions of Microsoft’s AI models locally. While powerful NPUs are becoming increasingly prevalent in the laptop market, they are not yet as readily available for desktop PCs. Microsoft is addressing this gap by focusing on integrating these NPUs into its mobile Surface devices.
The company has announced two new additions to the Surface PC lineup: updated versions of the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop. These 2025 models will maintain the familiar form factors: a 12-inch tablet and a 13-inch laptop, respectively, adhering to the design principles that have defined the Surface brand. Both devices are powered by the Snapdragon X Plus System-on-Chip (SoC) and feature 6GB of RAM, along with the Hexagon NPU. This NPU is the cornerstone of Microsoft’s Copilot+ implementation, enabling a range of AI-powered features slated for introduction in 2025.
One of the most appealing aspects of these new Surface devices is their more competitive pricing. The Microsoft Surface Pro with Snapdragon X Plus will start at $799, while the Surface Laptop will be available from $899. This represents a more affordable entry point compared to the existing Snapdragon X Elite models, making Copilot+ capabilities more accessible to consumers.
Despite its compact size, the Surface Laptop promises impressive performance. According to Microsoft, this Copilot+-enabled Surface Laptop is 50% faster than the Surface Laptop 5 and outperforms the MacBook Air M3. However, it’s important to note that this performance comparison lacks specific metrics, so users should exercise caution when interpreting this claim.
The new laptop is designed to offer exceptional battery life, with an estimated 23 hours of video playback and 16 hours of active web browsing. These figures are particularly noteworthy considering the device’s 13-inch 1920 x 1280 touchscreen display. While the refresh rate is a modest 60Hz, the emphasis on battery life aligns with the device’s focus on affordability and portability.
The Surface Laptop features a minimalist port selection, including a couple of USB Type-C ports for charging and data transfer, along with a USB 3.1 Type-A port for connecting older peripherals. The laptop also supports fast charging with a minimum power requirement of 60W, ensuring users can quickly replenish the battery when needed.
The Microsoft Surface Pro, on the other hand, embraces a tablet-like form factor while delivering similar processing power and specifications as the Surface Laptop. It shares the same NPU and Copilot+ focus, but offers a slightly shorter battery life, estimated at 16 hours of video playback and 12 hours of active browsing.
The Surface Pro features a 2196 x 1464 LCD touchscreen display with a refresh rate of up to 90Hz, which is surprisingly higher than the Surface Laptop’s display. The Surface Pro also appears to offer the same port layout as its larger counterpart, ensuring compatibility with a range of peripherals.
To transform the Surface Pro into a laptop-like device, users will need to purchase a compatible keyboard separately. The keyboard is not included in the box, so potential buyers should factor this additional cost into their purchasing decision.
Microsoft’s Copilot+ brings a suite of new AI-powered features to both the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop. One notable feature is Recall, which functions similarly to Pixel Screenshots. It allows the AI model to capture and retain information from the user’s screen and history. Due to potential privacy concerns, Recall will be an opt-in feature, giving users control over its activation.
Another significant feature is the integration of natural language search for documents and settings. Users will be able to describe a document or image using everyday language, and Windows will leverage AI to search for the item based on the provided description.
