NCAA Women’s Basketball Top 16 Seedings Preview, Regional Assignments Unveiled

The Road to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Title: Top 16 Seeds Revealed

March Madness is fast approaching, and the anticipation for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is palpable. With less than a month until Selection Sunday, the NCAA has released its first top 16 seedings, providing a glimpse into the potential shape of the tournament bracket.

Top 16 Teams Dominate

If the season were to conclude today, UCLA would emerge as the overall No. 1 seed. The Bruins have showcased their resilience throughout the campaign and possess the talent to make a deep run in March. Joining UCLA as No. 1 seeds are defending national champion South Carolina, Texas, and Notre Dame.

USC’s recent triumph over UCLA has not deterred them from being projected as a No. 2 seed, alongside LSU, UConn, and NC State. TCU, Duke, North Carolina, and Kansas State follow closely behind as No. 3 seeds. Kentucky, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Tennessee round out the top 16 as the No. 4 seeds.

Regional Assignments

Along with the seedings, the NCAA announced the regional assignments for the tournament. UCLA will lead the Spokane Regional 1, accompanied by LSU, Duke, and Tennessee. South Carolina, NC State, TCU, and Oklahoma will compete in the Birmingham 2 Regional. Texas, UConn, North Carolina, and Ohio State will face off in the Birmingham 3 Regional. Notre Dame, USC, Kansas State, and Kentucky will battle it out in the Spokane Regional 4.

Impactful Matchups

The remaining days before Selection Sunday will be filled with crucial matchups that could significantly alter the rankings. The Gamecocks and Huskies, both highly-ranked teams, recently squared off, and the outcome of that game may have a major impact on their future seedings. Other key clashes to watch include Tennessee vs. LSU, which could determine the top seed in the SEC Tournament.

Next Up: Top 16 Reveal

The NCAA will release its second top-16 reveal on Thursday, February 27th, at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2. This second update will provide an even clearer picture of the teams vying for the national championship.

Expert Analysis

"With less than a month to go before Selection Sunday, this first reveal provided some clarity on the top teams today," said Derita Dawkins, Arkansas assistant vice chancellor and deputy director of athletics and chair of the Division I Women’s Basketball Committee. "It also pointed to the many important matchups that will be played over the next several weeks that will greatly impact the 2025 championship field."

As the season winds down and the stakes rise, the top teams in women’s college basketball will continue to showcase their skills and jockey for position. The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament promises to be an unforgettable spectacle of athleticism, intensity, and passion.
